Virus protector or Windows Security essentials

My paid Avast contract finished. Think it slows down 64b HP 450 Probook. Read up on this but still not sure. 1. Many say WSecurity Essentials is enough (W7) - comment. (I never use online games) comment pse
2. Ohers say Essentials with whatchamacallit Malwarebites. Dont know what WB are - if recommendable is it the best free one in that line?

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.

7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

You may also install MBAM (below). You will get a free trial period and after that expires you can keep it on your computer and run a scan periodically.I've included the instructions on how to run a scan with MBAM.

Download and install: Please download Malwarebytes' scanner to your desktop.
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• It should update automatically if the computer is connected to the internet.
• Click on Threat Scan and click on Scan Now.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete make sure all the infections have "quarantine" selected in the Action box.
  
• Click on "Apply actions" You may be asked to Restart your computer to completely remove the infections.
  
• When disinfection is completed you can click on "Copy to Clipboard".
  
• Paste the log in you next reply (CTRL+ V)

IF OP comes back, just wondering if he meant what's a good antivirus software to use or whether he really does have an issue on his pc needing repairing.

sounds like he is chasing advice on whether ditching Avast and going inbuilt is advisable.
if so - if he was on Windows 10, I would say definitely.but for Windows 7, I would say get yourself a 3rd party AV program.  one good free one is Avira.Avast is also good, just too many pop-ups now.and yes, get the paid-for MalwareBytes Premium software. (about a week ago they were offering a half-price special)

AV test labs have ranked Defender under Win10 as good or better than the paid-for guys, high 90%'s repeatedly.Security Essentials (or Defender at one stage I think - whatever it was called) under Win7 only scored high 70%'s.

I use SE on all my computer regardless of what OS is running. Just as good if not better than most costly AV's
