    My laptop isn't working
    « on: October 10, 2018, 04:39:58 PM »
I uninstalled Realplayer because it wasn't working as videos wouldn't download from youtube. When I went to reinstall Realplayer, it said that I don't have enough free disk space. I also think that the disk space is why I've been having problems with my laptop that I've mentioned here.

Now, my question is how do get enough free disk space? And please, I need step by step instructions.

make/model computer and how large is the hard drive?

If you cant part with any data and dont mind information slightly slower to access on the system you can enabled drive compression. But I haven't used drive compression in years as for your system takes a performance hit having to decompress data to use it and compress new data.

Deleting programs you dont need or games you rarely play is another method of freeing up space.

Microsoft's support page on Freeing up Drive space in windows 10, give it a look through all the links provided there:

I clicked on the link and I have been using Disk Cleanup. Now, in the meantime, I was able to download Realplayer 3 different times. The problem was that it would  say Realplayer was successfully installed but it was nowhere to be seen. I couldn't open it. Then when I tried to install Realplayer again, I would get the "you don't have enough free space. Should I continue to use Disk Cleanup?

None of the above is relevant. How large is your HD and how much free space is there?

Open file explorer. Right click your C. drive. Left click on "Properties" at the bottom of the menu. It will tell you the amount of disk space used and free space in GB's. It will also give the capacity of the drive.

Additionally, you can use Tree Size (free) to see where the space is being used: https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

Your system is choking for space...you need a larger HDD...

              I'm suprised it even boots...

You're well under 10% free, which is the bare minimum that should even work. I agree with patio - replace the drive. You can create a disc image or clone with Macrium Reflect (free) or, if you want to pay for the best, Acronis True Image and restore it to the new drive.

Sure you can buy a new hard drive with larger capacity. Should probably want to get something bigger than that 27.8 GB one that you currently have so then you don't have to worry that you're going to run out of space really quickly.

Regards to compressing hard drive, sure you can definitely do that but then if you got a big enough drive, you shouldn't have to. And computer hope here does recommend not to compress drives.

So, I have a lot of documents, videos and files. What would be the best HDD for me? Also, am I even looking at the right thing?

Also, if I'm looking at the right thing based on the link, where would it go on my Laptop?

                  Hi,

You still haven't said the make and model of Laptop. The reason this is important is with a 27GB hard drive it is unlikely to be any of the drives in your link. And may not even have a replaceable drive.
Also you said you downloaded real player installer 3 times, if downloading files more than once it maybe you have a lot of space used in the downloads folder.
Windows keeps files in the update cache this can get to 10 GB's or more so worth clearing.   You can use Diskcleanup then Select cleanup system files from there you can select (windows update cleanup) and (downloaded program files) . Deleting these files on my computer would free up 8.4GB a 1/3 of your disk space.
If you have System Restore enabled you may want to reduce the size allocated to restore points or disable system restore, not ideal.

Please give us the make and model of the laptop and if you have a link to the specs would be amazing.

Post everything you can read on the outside of the case and on the bezel surrounding your screen and keyboard. Also what does the splash screen read (the screen that first appears when you turn on your laptop)? Someone may be able to discern the make & model from what you post. Otherwise your best bet may be to take it to a service depot where they can assess it and give you an estimate on changing your drive.

Please DO NOT post everything you see on the outside of your computer. To find the manufacturer, either look for the silver sticker on the bottom of the laptop, the name on the lid of the computer, or watch the name that appears on the screen when you first boot. The model number is also on that sticker. Alternatively, follow the step by step instructions in the link below, post your model number, and we'll figure out the rest:

I have to find the make and the model as I have been busy. I have 2 questions. One, is there anyway I can purchase something that I would be able to save my files and that way I can free up disk space? Two,  is there anyway I can download Real Player and it wouldn't take up that much disk space?

                          1. Well to free up disk space, you can get yourself additional HDD for more space, or get a flash drive (see https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/j/jumpdriv.htm if you don't know what a flash drive is and generally you can buy those where you normally can buy computers or computer parts anyway)

                          2. If there are options you can remove yourself (for example, if software comes with additional addons that allow for additional options or translations you don't need) or something of that nature. Or you find some kind of 'lite' version of the software you want if they offer such (which typically is a stripped down version of the non-lite version) then seems like you can't just make it smaller like that.

                            1) Now, if I was to purchase an HDD from Amazon, I'm assuming that the more expensive, the more files you can save on there?

                            2) I've tried downloading Realplayer from some sites but there are a lot of pop-up ads and spam.

                            1. HDD with  bigger capacity = ability to store more stuff on it. Yes, generally cost is relative to capacity, but don't forget you may have to factor in shipping costs if you buy from online places such as Amazon.

                            2. Just download reaplayer from the official site, unless you have a need for an older version: http://www.real.com/realplayer

                            3. What is the make and model of the computer? think you were going to find out a little later, but just don't forget though.

                            4. Finally, you can just save your old hard drive, put the operating system onto there, and get another drive to store your data if you wish to do that. May be a good idea, see what other members opinions are for you though. Good luck.

If you want to move some data from your hd to another location you should purchase an external hard drive, not a flash drive. But you still should replace your drive with a larger one. Still waiting for make and model of computer.

Ok, so based on the link what does that mean. I can't save anything to HDD? Can I save it to a flash drive or something else? And if so, what can I get?

You can get an external hard drive and copy whatever you like to that. Also, as I suggested earlier in this thread you can download treesize and see where the space is being used and then offload some of those files (or delete the unnecessary ones). Candidly, if it were me I'd buy a new laptop.

Really, buy a new Laptop. It's only a year old.

Let me ask, I can get an external HDD? But it would have to be one that's kind of expensive because more expensive=more files I can download.

I'm assuming external HDD and external Hard Drive is the same thing?

Here is a link from Amazon.

                                   https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_22?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=external+hard+drive+laptop&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Aexternal+hard+drive+laptop

What would be best for me? I'm also assuming you can save more with a Hard Drive with TB than GB?

Patio, the model in question has been for sale for a few years, however they were being sold new until fairly recently.

                                  Rant about manufacturers incoming...

I don't think this storage issue is necessarily really related to age. The problem is HP, and other manufacturers, and their disgusting tactic of exploiting general user ignorance regarding aspects like disk storage. people see the low price tag and see it in action for a bit and it all looks up to snuff. It's not until- say a year later- that the user discovers that the storage space provided makes the system useless. For a while the models sold could be upgraded- HP and other manufacturers would use an interposer to install the eMMC drive. But, now, they are basically using proprietary plugs *specifically* to prevent their consumers from upgrading the storage.

Strictly speaking, 32GB is "big enough" for Windows 10. But only on paper. And only if you never install applications. Once you install a few applications- and actually use the system- files will accumulate on the drive and without constant maintenance and cleaning out of the drive it's very easy to run out of space. And the very user that these manufacturers target- individuals like JackCatalano- don't have the skillset to really tackle that problem appropriately. (And heck, even if they do, why is that Pain in the *censored* their responsibility when manufacturers should be selling products that aren't hot garbage?). So they end up screwed. Naturally, if you call their support, they will push their laptop models that come with larger drives, Particularly now that they have *intentionally* made it so that the drives cannot be upgraded on some of their lesser models like this one.

I don't think an External HDD will really fix the problem. That is only useful because you can save your own files onto the HDD; but 32GB is simply much not big enough for Windows 10, that's why pretty much everybody with a 32GB eMMC has to deal with this problem. You *can* use an External to help with some of the Windows stuff- but That is a despicably involved process f or the manufacturers to require of users just to use their PC normally like a normal person. When the crappy, awful design and proprietary limitations intentionally added to a system require the user to follow a three step process involving a second PC (which itself is not strangled in the same way) and a Flash Drive in order to install, I think it's fair to say the manufacturers don't have the consumer's best interest in mind when they save the 10-15 bucks on storage by using a 32GB eMMC instead of 64GB.

A typical laptop from ten years ago came with a hard drive that had at least 7 times as much storage. My Smartphone from 2014 has twice the storage. The only reason these laptop manufacturers are selling hot garbage with 32GB eMMC drives is to exploit users who don't know any better and aren't aware of all the stupid hoops they are going to have to jump through because of it. You can just imagine the marketing folks in those companies, with their squirrelly faces, in the break room laughing about how they pulled one over on so many people, and can only wish you could clamp their eyelids open, fill the sprinkler system with lemon juice, and burn some toast.

Have you done all the things suggested to free up space on the laptops hard drive. You should be able to get about 10Gb free space if you are running windows 10 with a couple of small programs like chrome and real player.

There also maybe an option of getting a 128gb sdcard and using the card reader for drive expansion this would be slower than the current drive. Windows is able to add 2 drives together called spanning to make 1 drive. If you do decide to do this still get the usb drive and do regular backups. A sd card isn't designed for millions of read writes so could fail before the emmc drive in the laptop. make sure you keep regular backups.

Have a question. I have a lot of documents that are saved on Disk C. Is there anyway I can free up more space on Disk C by sending those documents to my email or something? I have an email address already so I don't have to set one up.

Getting an external drive is a way of making more space on your main drive.

There's also the option to send files onto the cloud if you're into those things (Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive, Dropbox ... that kind of thing).

I have a few questions. My laptop keeps freezing. I've had it for 4 years. There are all sorts of things wrong with it. First, they say that the battery is low. Two, my browser is google chrome. And my computer freezes constantly. It says "page unresponsive", out of memory, google chrome didn't shut down right. I constantly have to x out of the internet because my computer constantly freezes and when I try to access the internet, it's just completely frozen. Pages don't load correctly. Websites that I click on or type in takes forever to get too and even then, I can't access it. I also access xfinity stream on my laptop.  do have photos and videos on my laptop, so I'm wondering if that's it or not. I did delete a bunch of photos and videos. I can't delete anymore because they have sentimental value and it would be too hard.

So, I ask, what should I do? Should I just get a new laptop? Can somebody help me with this?

                                            1) Unless your drive is close to full, it doesn't matter what is on it.
                                            2) Does the same thing happen with other browsers?
                                            3) WHO says your battery is low?

                                            Hi Jack ,
Google chrome is starting to have problems working with Windows 7 especially if all the updates are not installed. There is 2 options to diagnose this.

                                            1. download Speccy from here https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download
Run the program after it completes select file, publish snapshot and copy the url to your next post.
This report doesn't contain any personnel information.
From the report we should have a clear idea what the cause of the problem is. A bit like a blood test.

2 As Allan suggested try a different browser like firefox  from here https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
And see if you still have the issue

I tried to download Speccy but it said that the disk is full. What should I do now? I've tried freeing up disk space but it doesn't seem to work.

                                              Hi Jack

When you delete stuff off a computer it goes into the recycle bin. Perhaps right click on the recycle bin and select empty recycle bin.  Windows will have problems running of a full hard drive so freeing up space is the first step.

Did you install a 3rd party Anti Virus? If not, you're probably using Defender. If so, follow the instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/scan-an-item-with-windows-security-d1c8c01d-12ed-e768-cbb8-830ea8ccf8e6

I'm not sure if I installed a 3rd Party Anti Virus. I clicked on the link and tried to follow the directions but what's in the link is different than from what I doing.  In other words, Virus & threat protection. Then, select Manage settings (or Virus & threat protection settings in early versions of Windows 10} and switch Real-time protection to On. I didn't see any of that when I clicked on Settings and Windows Update.

go to start and in the search box type: windows security (click on the windows security shield when it appears in the top half of the start box). Click on virus and threat protection. What AV is listed?

Meanwhile, you can download the free version of MalwareBytes and run a full scan.

I tried to download MalwareBytes but it said that the disk was full. How do I free up disk space? I know how to do it but it doesn't it works when I do it.  I use disk cleanup but it doesn't feel like it cleans up anything. Is there another way I could run a full scan or free up disk space?

Have you emptied the recycle bin as suggested 30 September 2021 also you still haven't posted a speccy report which will help to isolate a hardware/over heating issue.

I've emptied out the recycle bin but I'm still having problems. I tried downloading speccy but it said that my disk was full. How do I free up disk space? I feel like I've tried and it doesn't seem to work out. It can't be that I have a lot on my computer. Plus, it says that the battery is low when I turn it on.

Hi, I think this will help. Open a cmd window in admin mode. type in MRT for the "Malicious Software Removal Tool" [it opens a program - MRT is a command shortcut]

then when that is completed copy and paste this in the cmd window.

                                                          Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

                                                          let those run.

then type sfc /scannow in the cmd window.

                                                          when that is completed

run this in the command line. chkdsk /r it will tell you that it will run next time the computer is restarted.

                                                          So restart the computer.

When you are back... I would recommend that you run an offline defender scan. https://www.wikihow.com/Perform-an-Offline-Scan-with-Windows-10-Defender

I tried downloading ESET but it said that I don't have enough disk space. Nothing seems to be working. I need to clear up disk space but I don't know how.

You're not supposed to download it. You're supposed to run the scanner online.

I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

I was told that if I wanted a response that I should've replied to the topic within 30 days which I didn't do. I'm so sorry for that as I've been busy. So, I'm starting a new topic. It's still the same question as my laptop keeps freezing and just not working. I don't think it's a virus or anything but I would like to know what's going on. It's happening more frequent now more anything.

To be honest, in my experience, when I've had a Windows computer for over a year, things start to slow down and get buggy. That's just the way Windows is, especially if you have a Hard Drive and not a Solid State Drive. If you are not well experienced with backups or computers in general, I recommend taking your computer to a repair shop and having them do a full data backup and resetting your computer.

That's what I do every once in a while with my computers, that's how I keep them running fast. I think it will be much cheaper than going out and buying a whole new computer and possibly still having to pay someone to transfer your data.

I try to free some of it up and it still doesn't seem to be working. My laptop seems to be freezing even more now and automatically shuts down. Can somebody help me on what I should do. I know that you've answered this question in the past for me but all the suggestions don't seem to be working. I can't free up any disk space because they say my disk is full if you can believe that. Please help. Thank You.

Reading thru all your posts etc it appears your laptop has a 32 GB hard drive which is likely not up gradable. So the laptop is not suitable for running Windows 10. It will keep running out of disk space . Probably hasn't had windows updates installed as these need more disk space.

You need to get another laptop.

I really don't want to delete any more of my files. But if I was to delete my files and videos, would that free up the disk space?
