In my country, our "turkey day" is December 25th. Yes, Libre Office.

Both f the above experts agree on Libre Office.
If you want another possible viewpoint, look here:

OpenOffice is a discontinued open-source office suite. It was an open-sourced version of the earlier StarOffice, which Sun Microsystems acquired in 1999 for internal use. Libre Office forked from it in January 2011, and 3 months later, OpenOffice stopped development, all personnel were fired.

    2x3i5x,
Good point.  WPS is also free and you can get a version the works on a Smart Phone.
And it has a free cloud service. And it does PDF.

One possible consideration with regards to WPS is that it's a proprietary application coming from China.

thank all of you for your help.

after reading the above link i'm beginning to question the validity of some of our technology.
as someone who knows nothing about programming, how can i "trust" some of the offerings on the internet ?  OpenOffice is still functioning. i received an email from them on 12/1.

      happy holidays !

Have a look at Softmaker office. They do have a free version as well as a Portable, Linux, Android  and Cloud based.

      To be comprehensive:
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_office_suites
      There are  12 links quoted.
      The online freeware times are:
      Quote
      Freeware suites
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides – an AJAX-based online office suite from Google. The suite includes a word processor, a spreadsheet program, and a presentation editor. Available free and as an enterprise service.
ONLYOFFICE Personal – online office suite; combines text, spreadsheet and presentation editors
Office Online – online office suite from Microsoft which is based on OneDrive. It includes a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation application and a notetaking program. Allow users to create, edit, save and share documents.
Zoho Office Suite – free online office suite from Zoho Corporation. Includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, and collaboration groupware.
iWork for iCloud – a free-to-use but somewhat feature-limited online version of Apple's iWorks office suite, accessible using both Mac and PC web browsers. It is currently still in beta.
Hard to say which is better. Your choice.  :)

Yes, as Geek says, if you have a Microsoft account, which is free, you can use Microsoft Office Online (which is not Office 365).

WPS Office is free as well as Libre Office but WPS comes from Chine though. Not really a fan of software made in China.
