Does safe mode show u anything.. If so then it is probally just an explorer.exe issue. It is very common to find something like that in Windows 98. Explorer.exe is the thing that runs the desktop and start menu. Not to be confused with iexplorer.exe which is the internet...

    computer doofus.....Well , I've run out of ideas ....other than to use your restore disks... (which you cant find ) I guess a phone call to Compaq is in order.

    You should be able to download what you need from Compaq Presario Support here:  http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

    You will need your model #.

    Ty all so much ;D I am out of town this week but will try to get to this fix as soon as I get back. ::) U all r great and keep up the good work!!!     ::)In answer to your ???? Windows98, there is nuttin with safe mode either. I have tried all the options to try to get this to start properly. I turn machine on and press F8 numerous times which brings me to safe mode and other options, none of em work. :(

    :-?Hello all just lil ole me again with another adventure for all of you!!!! LOL ;D Ok got tired of trying to fix tower running millenium and got a different one from someone. Problem is......(drum roll)  :o it is running 2000 professional and it seems to need an administrators password . Hahahahaha Yes ofcourse I don't know what the heck it is duh!!!!! I told you guys I am a blonde!!! The guy who re did this PC for me says he didn't put one on it (ya ya) then how come I have the problem? Is there anyway to by pass this or something? Please advise!! Again thanks in advance for your help BTW I never did call Compaq about the other one nor did it ever get fixed. byeeeeee Computer Doofus ::) :-?

      Get the 2000 disk off him, do a fresh install & keep the disk. ;)
      Don't forget to update windows & install protection too.

        Just get a copy of W2K and do a clean install, it's madness to have a computer without an original OS disk.
        As W2K has no registration or validation requirements you should be able to secure it without any difficulty at all. ;)

          You can buy a copy of Win2K from eBay or get a friend with it to burn a copy for you.  Provided your computer is licensed to use Win2K (i.e. the sticker is on the case) there is no real problem with doing this.  Some people sell bootlegged copies of Windows for under $10.

          I would never recommend this course of action to someone that wasn't legally entitled to install a copy of Windows, naturally.

          [size=14] :-? OK Guru that was extremely funny!!!!! Hahahahahahaha!!! Yes I have friends and neighbors, I think! Is what your speaking of the Millenium version of Windows? I'm thinking that is what I need for my original problem as well (see above). OK well I got to get to this ASAP b/c I started school this week and need my PC. BTW I am doing the Graphic Arts thing and my professor says that in that world a Mac is much better? What do you all think and can you also give me some pros and cons as well. Thanks. I might be looking into getting a laptop soon. Remember one thing please!!!! When you respond to me I AM A COPUTER DOOFUS!!!!!!  Most PC jargin I am not familiar with most of the time.               Do not under any circumstances get Millenium Edition (ME).

              You need to get [highlight]Windows 2000 Professional (W2K)[/highlight](There was no amateur version issued for this).
