Windows 10 no longer plays DVDs.
« on: April 04, 2019, 06:40:45 PM »
The same DVD player works if I boot Windows XP.
I have tried doing a new install of the VLC video player. I get a pastel lilac screen. No video at all.
Google search does not find a real answer.
Windows says it has the best drivers.
I don't know when this happened. At one time it did work fine.
Any  suggestions?

Does the drive read data disks reliably?

Sorry didn't notice it works on XP.

If you view an inserted DVD video disk in Windows Explorer and select a .VOB file, can you right click and choose another app?

MS removed the ability to play DVDs from Windows 10 some time ago.  There is an app in the MS Store that you can buy but most people just use something like VLC instead.  The DVD Player app costs $14.99 from the store.  It doesn't have a very good reputation but you can install it with a 7-day free trial to see if you like it or not.

On a machine that was upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 you should have gotten the MS DVD Player app for free but not on a clean install.

strollin,
Due to other issues, I had to do a clean install.
Om my Windows 7 Pro 64 bit system it works. (This Dell 755 is a triple boot thing.)
The VLC has been recommended elsewhere and it does not work. even the VOB file does not work.

Yes, Microsoft suggests getting a app from the Windows store. I am not going to pay %15 for something  that n free.

Geek - From my understanding, the DVD player app isn't worth $15 anyway.  What happens when you try playing the DVD using VLC?  VLC works for me in all of my machines.

VLC gets stuck. It can not open. It gets stuck on the taskbar.
With some effort I can get to where is shows this.

Load it up without a video, then go to Tools => Preferences => Video => and uncheck 'Accelerated video output (Overlay)' then restart and see if you can play DVDs.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

It has been moved or hidden in versions of VLC 3.x and later, I think. I have 3.0.6 and I couldn't find it. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough?

You maybe on to something. I removed V LC and installed a newer version and then did as BC and Patio said. I did not find it earlier.
The VLC Version numbers are confusing.
The new one says 2.2.4 Weathermax. Does it also give rainfall reports?  :P

It was moved to the "Input/Codecs" section in later versions, I think. "Hardware accelerated decoding".
