    suspect mcafee link
    « on: May 23, 2020, 06:36:58 PM »
I recently upgraded to windows 10 and to renew my virus program i bought a mcafee subscription off of ebay. the ebay seller sent a link in a n ebay email and I clicked on the link because it looked legit and ran it but nothing happened after that. its an exe file 40mb and my it buddy says that is too big. I think I may have downloaded something hazardous. can anyone out there check this file and tell me what it is? is it dangerous trojan or something. mcafee did not start or install as far as I know, I deleted the old mcafee before upgrading to win10. so now all I have is windows defender.
    thank you for any advice

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

I clicked on the link and I had the option to download it but I don't trust anything like that. You already have Windows Defender as your AV. Why do you want another? WD is all you need.

I just upgraded my os to 10 last night and my mcafee had expired so I figured I might as well renew it.  in the past 10 years or more I always had mcafee because 2nd party seemed the way to go and it came installed on my laptop. after running the download link and nothing happened I called my IT buddy and he said defender is all anyone needs now.. now I know, I have not reinstalled Mcafee but im wondering if the download was a virus or fishing program.  the ebay account I bought it from sounds Nigerian.. not trying to stereotype but Nigeria is well known for their scams. Im hoping that someone with more knowledge than me can look at the file and see exactly what I ran..
      thanks

      Hi
The link is legit, it is the first part of the McAfee install and from the serial number will install the components of McAfee which you purchased with the subscription.
If you exited out of the install before it finished then it cleans up all the changes so no harm done. If you don't intend to use Mcafee there is a website to apply for a refund.
The site is found with a search for     mcafee refund support

Lisa is right, it is legit, McAfee just confirmed it is a genuine download. This version of Mcafee is provided to corporates for up to 20-40 users at a time. The service is registered in the name on an 'administrator' and you will simply be one of many users on that system.  The only difference between this and the home version is that you will not be able to manage renewal in 5 years, for £3 for 5 years I'm happy with that.
