Imac stuck in the white screen

Hi, my iMac (the one made in late 2009) is stuck in the white screen. I tried to boot the computer in every mode possible but it didn't work. I heard that I need to boot my iMac using an external USB, How can I do that?

Hi
If your Mac is Intel based you should be able to boot most versions of Linux. Parted Magic although not free is very cheap and can boot  from a CD or pen drive.
Even if you don't want to do a full repair Parted Magic may be able to help you access your files and diagnose what part of the Mac is faulty.
