VLC media player

Hello everyone

I am running Ubuntu MATE 19.04 and although i downloaded all codecs during install the VLC media player will not play any cd's or dvd's?
I have installed Ubuntu restricted extras via the Synaptic Package Manager and although VLC does not display any errors it just hangs there.
Could anyone help me out please.
