Dual Booting
« on: July 08, 2019, 01:53:21 PM »
I'm trying to get more experience with Linux and am in the process of setting up a dedicated machine for it but don't have the funds right now. In the past when I dual booted OS's, I would put both on same drive. What i'm wondering now is would there be any advantage or disadvantage to installing the 2 different OS's on different hard drives instead? Thanks for the input.

Seperate HDD's is actually the cleanest setup to have and i highly recommend it...

NOTE: Make sure the Win HDD is disconneccted til the Linux drive install is complete and all is tested...

Thanks Patio, I actually saw a couple of Tube videos on that but wanted to get an opinion here cause this place has never steered me in the wrong direction.

After trying a few Live sessions I decided to try Mint 18 Cinnamon and for some reason, when I start the computer, the only way to boot to the Linux drive is to hit F12 and choose that physical drive. If I turn it on and walk away it goes straight into Win 7 by default. I disconnected all drives when I installed Linux and rebooted into Linux twice before I shut down to reconnect my other drives but something went wrong. It's not a big deal it was just surprising to see it.

That is the proper boot...i forgot to mention HDD/OS needs to be selected via BIOS...

Once you've done it 80 times it becomes automatic... ;D

I guess I'll just leave as is then since it's not a problem for me until I get better with Linux then I'll change it in bio's to have it boot to Linux by default. Thanks a lot for all your help
