    Really Strange
    « on: August 12, 2019, 08:54:55 PM »
    Hello all!

Please bare with me as I try to describe what is going on. I really wanted to follow the instructions before posting here but that seems to be impossible for me to do. I tried to open CCleaner however, nothing happens and the program doesn't respond like it should. I end up having to get the task manager up to close it.

    Onto my situation...

    I'm using a...

    HP Pavilion G Series (G7)
    Windows 7 (version 2)

It started a month ago when something happened to my install of Google Chrome, I had to uninstall it and came face to face with problems from their new installer, it would freeze on the 'on your marks' and not continue with the install. Since then I've been using Firefox but recently, as in the last week I'm finding that certain programs will not respond to me at all. Firefox and Discord respond accordingly when I need them too but I can't even get Microsoft Essentials to run to do a scan to see what's up.

I'm also dealing with my laptop shutting down properly, either. It goes to the screen but gets stuck on "updating computer..." I've left it alone for hours and nothing ever happens and I end up having to shut it off the hard way.

I'd love to be able to get things back into working order, and to have the newest version of Google Chrome.

    Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Please try running the scans in Safe Mode.

I tried running the CCleaner in Safe Mode, but it did not work there either. When I went back into normal mode, the CCleaner did pop up as an Admin notice asking if I wanted to run the program. Clicked for it to run and waited-- the program never popped up on screen. :(

Please check to see if you have a Restore Point prior to this business with Google.

This does not appear to be a malware related so I will move this thread to the Windows 7 forum and perhaps someone there will be able to help.

        You said you gave:

        HP Pavilion G Series (G7)
        Windows 7 (version 2)
How long have you had it? Have you ever done any replacement ore repair work on it?  Have you ever replace the hard drive?

        Have you run memory tests?

Can you boot from a diagnostic USB stick?

In the BIOS setup there is a way to boot from a USB stick. But first you have to get or make such a USB thing. A friend with a good PC or laptop can help you make one. Here is a recent item on Computer Hope.
        https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001366.htm
        Another like it:
        https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/u/ubcd.htm

The objective is to see if the laptop itself is OK. The USB stick runs without the hare drive, so that gives us a way to verify the laptop hardware without dependency on the hard drive.  But a memory problem might also be the issue. The diagnostic programs have  tests for memory also.

You may  need the help of a friend who has done this before. But you can do it h yourself if you have patience.
But as a last resort you can buy a diagnostic USB l product already to go, but do not pay a lot for it.  Some of these are real rib-offs.

Do you want to try using a diagnostic USB thing?  :)

          Hello,

I've not done anything at all to this laptop since I bought it. I do have access to another computer, which I am sure will help loads so yes, I would definitely like to try the USB thing that you have mentioned.

          Thank you.

Here are some links to earlier posts and articles on this site.
They tell about how you mike a USB stick into a bookable diagnostic thing.

Also,, most Linux boot CDs can be use for some simple tests. The Linux installer has an option where you 'demo Linux without used any space on the hard drive. Most of these can be make into a USB device.
A popular diagnostic is the UBCD, which can likewise can go on USB.
          Look at this:

However, it's a burden to carry a CD with you everywhere, which is why making a bootable USB flash drive with UBCD can be a lifesaver. Below are the steps on how to make a bootable UBCD that boots from a flash drive.
Many here have  recommend this tool. Me too.  8)

Thank you for your response! I'm going through the steps of creating a USB boot drive and have come up on a problem on Step 6. I get this error:

            "bootsect.exe/nt60 h:
'bootsect.exe/nt60 h:' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

What did I do wrong? :(
