    Boot issues
    « on: August 14, 2019, 05:09:24 AM »
    Got a new computer

plugged old SSD into an external - formatted it and set it up as a backup

but everytime I restart, if the external is on it tries to boot with it.

Checked BIOS and the boot order looks right.

I can turn the external off everytime I restart but god thats annoying.

    How can I fix this??

    Thanks

With hard drive higher on list vs removable drives or USB drives and it still trying to boot from USB, I would look in the USB settings in BIOS if it has advanced or legacy USB controls to see if it has options for bootable media enable/disable.

If this was an older computer I would be thinking it was a weak CMOS battery to where the BIOS was misbehaving like this to get to USB boot when hard drive is higher on the list of boot priority.

Why would you want a back-up drive connected all the time? It's a back-up and should only be connected when backing up your computer otherwise, I could get infected if left connected all the time.

I need to backup automatically every night.  I may even move to backing up a couple times a day.  I need redundancy and often. Connecting and disconnecting a drive each time seems super annoying

Im ditching the external dock and getting regular external drives.  This is driving me nuts.

You either have not set boot priority proper and saved it...usually F10 after making changes or the external is overriding BIOS settings.
Only 2 things it could be.

or the external is overriding BIOS settings

:-\ Cant say i have ever seen that happen. When thinking of the initialization order of a computer and its POST instructions/tests,  BIOS is always in control, with exception to Windows 8 and newer where Windows takes BIOS hostage with UEFI and controls rules. And with exception to a Packard Bell of the mid 1990s that would take a flash from the floppy drive with a floppy disk that had a low level OS and flash binary to push to a system where if the flash was bad or wrong you would have a paperweight after.

I had fun with a laptop that would display press F12 to enter the BIOS and F12 would never get me there. When I dug deeper into why it wasn't working, and I knew that the keyboard was healthy and enabled at that point in the process of boot, I found out that I had to go into Windows 8 and tell it to grant me the permission to use the F12 key to getting into my own BIOS. And this was the fun of getting an ASUS X401A Laptop to downgrade to Windows 7 which the laptop would not boot off the USB DVD-ROM as for the C: drive was always #1 on the list. Until I forced Windows 8 to giving me my BIOS control back and then I was able to tell it to add removable drives/USB devices to #1 on list and then Hard Drive #2.
