Create desktop shortcut Windows 10. Duh?

It do no work for me. It used too, I think.  ???
I can not do this:

OK. I will sow pictures. Here they are.

Kohn.jpg        my current desktop, my shortcuts are missing.
Maxine.jpg     my sweet wife's desktop
MyStype.jpg   later, after play with above, got this, but not sure how I did it.

Question:
How to get the last style to be my desktop. (I am Kohn.)
Thanks for you kind help.
(Meanwhile, my family is has complained about Internet failures.   :o  Not how I want to spend a Sunday.)

Looks like your desktop icons are hidden.  Right-click on your desktop, select View->Show desktop icons.

This is actually discussed in the article you linked to in the section titled "Working With Your Shortcuts".
