Windows wont load

I have a dell computer and had a power outage.  every time i turn my computer on it says that it was shut down improperly and it has options to start in safe mode or from last known settings, etc.  Every option i choose it just restarts and gos back to the same screen.  i am running windows 98 please help as i am not that good with computers!

When you got the machine did you get a Windows CD or a restore disk?

No i don not have a recover cd the computer was baught second hand

    You definetly need to get the recovery cd then. That is the only way to fix it.
    Unless you go buy another cd.

    You might get lucky and be able to do a repair installaion with a borrowed CD, but ultimately you will need your own, as disasters WILL happen.  :o :o :o :o :o

    Can you run chkdsk /f  from the command prompt?

      Before running chkdsk try booting to DOS. In the boot options screen choose "Command prompt only". Type scanreg /fix<enter> and after it completes, reboot. If that doesn't help, boot to the DOS prompt and type scanreg /restore<enter> and choose a date before the trouble began. After the restore is completed, reboot.
