Wired computer use wifi?
« on: March 20, 2020, 04:07:21 AM »
I’m having to work from home currently and require internet access on my computer. I have had to bring a computer from the office home with me as I don’t usually use windows at home. The computer I’ve brought home does not work with WIFI, so needs an Ethernet. This has meant that the only place I can have the computer is in my living room, which isn’t convenient due to others being in the house.

Is there anything I could use, such as an adapter of some kind, that I could plug in and give the computer access to WiFi so it could be used in another room?

Let me try to give a broad answer.
As a starting  place, I will assume use of Xfinity equipment.
My house has both TV and Internet service. We also have cell phones.
My Internet comes from Comcast and uses the name Xfinity.
The Virginity router has WI-if. It has to be turned on and the password set. Customer service can do it for me or I can do it my sled.
At one time the device was:
http://10.0.0.1
(But recently it was changed. Yours may differ.)
Then I wee a page in my browser that lets me get into the Wireless setup for the router, Once set, it gives both an inherent connection or a wireless to any computer or device in my house. Often we have two Desktops and four smartphones running at the same time. On of the Ethernet connections go out side to another router in my barn. There I have a spare D-Link router with wireless. It is set as an AP thing,  that way anybody in the barn can use a smartphone or laptop to get my internet connection.

Your Internet provider can help you with this.  :)

I think the op just needs a wifi dongle in order to add wifi capability to his work computer.  See the link posted by Allan above.

strollin,
You are right. I got it backwards.  :-[
Yes, he just needs a dongle.
A Wi-Fi dongle will give a high speed connection.
Here is one:

Nice Wi-Fi Dongle from Amazon.

I got  one like that and it works good.   :)
