    Cannot Browse All China Websites
    « on: July 15, 2021, 12:13:40 AM »
Since a few weeks ago, my sister's laptop suddenly become unable to browse all China websites. It can display only the main page, but if you click on any link, it will show "This site can't be reached."

It happens to all browsers, and only China websites.

It happens only if the laptop is connected to the wi-fi. No problem if connected to the mobile hotspot.

Is it caused by some settings in the modem or network connection?

      Hi Green,

Here are the situations with different connections:

      Laptop on wifi - cannot.
Laptop on mobile hotspot - can.
Phone on mobile data - sometimes can, sometimes cannot.
Phone on wifi - sometimes can, sometimes cannot.

How to trace a route to the website?

      Thanks.

My sister brought her laptop to her friend's house, using the wifi there (same ISP), she can browse the Chinese websites on her laptop with no problem.

So as I suspected from the beginning, there must be something to do with her modem/router that blocks those website.

Strictly anecdotal, but are the issues strictly happening on an AT&T fiber connection? A few friends and I were troubleshooting an interesting problem around 3 months ago, where some Chinese sites wouldn't load when using an AT&T fiber connection. A traceroute would terminate around a hop before leaving the AT&T network.

If you're curious, you can open a command prompt and run tracert and the ip address of the site to get a rough idea of all the routers you're going through. You may have to copy the domain out of the URLs the failing links are pointing in order to get the actual ip addresses to trace.
