Windows 2000/Turning off system restore.
« on: February 23, 2006, 09:46:14 PM »
I got a Windows 2000 computer from a garage sale, and I think it is set to system restore whenever I log out. I wan't to disable this so I can save files to the computer, and not have them disappear next time I log on.

This is may not be system restore because I don't use system restore or know exactly what it is.
If this is another setting please offer your assistance then too.

Thanks for the help guys.  :)

I don't believe Win2000 has system restore.  ::)

Are you able to log on as administrator?

Any used computer should be formatted and Windows reinstalled to remove the previous owner's baggage. I don't suppose you got a Windows CD with this?

No, but all I know is that when I save things to the local disk, and log off they aren't there the next time.

If I connect to a network drive and save stuff there it is safe.

Thanks  :)

I'll have to go check not sure what kind of account I'm using.

No, I don't have the CD.  :-/

None of his own stuff is anywhere on the computer so he must have loaded it himself or done a good job cleaning up.

So if you make a new folder on the C drive called "Stuff" and put some file in there neither the file NOR the folder is visible?

Yes, and it's not just hidden I tryed to install a game on it, and after I logged off I guess it was deleted.

Is it possible to put read only on an entire drive?

If a boot drive was read only the system probably wouldn't even boot. Your description sounds like something like Ghost is running at startup and reimaging the drive but I somehow very much doubt that!
Does a HijackThis log throw any light on the situation?
