Quick System Folder question...
« on: February 24, 2006, 05:37:04 PM »
Is Windows XP and NT operating system?
What exactly is NT, and what does it mean?
Windows 2000 NT

Question: Why is it in some XP installs the system directory is called C:\WINDOWS and in others C:\WINNT

What causes the difference?  :-?

Windows XP is based on NT technology and was originally known as NT5.
The WinNT folder usually occurs in WinXP after an upgrade from Win NT has been performed.

No he means an upgrade install.  If you have a Windows NT machine and boot to an XP disk you have the option to do an upgrade install.  It has to be Windows NT 4.0 and it can only upgrade to Windows XP Professional, not Windows XP Home.  Windows NT 3.51 or lower cannot upgrade to XP.

NT stands for New Technology.  Along with that came NTFS, which stands for New Technology File System.

My dad has a laptop (from the university) with Windows XP it's system directory is C:\WINNT does that mean that it was booted from a previous Windows NT OS?

Windows XP can still use fat or fat32 file systems too right?

You may change system folder name during installation.

Windows XP is intended to be the marriage of the home OS (9x) and the business OS (NT). The unmitigated disaster that was WinME was the supposed forerunner of XP which feigned non dependence on MSDOS by attempting to hide it.
The big difference between XP and the 9x series is that it is entirely NT based - ie MSDOS is not present.

When you boot to the command line through safe mode are you using cmd.exe?

Command launches a DOS emulator, which is why there are so many problems running DOS programs under NT/XP.

The common DOS interpreter is command.com by the way.
