missing or corrupted files
« on: March 30, 2004, 06:05:29 AM »
hello, please could you help me to get round this little problem?..

BACKGROUND
------------------
OS used: win98

user problem: some keys not working viz most of the symbols above the numbers on the numeric keys such as brackets, exclamation mark, inverted commas, etc.

tried:
new keyboard, system file checker, replacing files from win98 installation CD but cant use extract command at all or find the files i need on Win CD ROM.

Problem ID
On booting up, after the Win98 graphic has appeared and config.sys has been read, the following message appears on the black DOS screen;

missing or corrupted file: keyb.com
missing or corrupted file: mode.com

followed by <three times>

there is an error on line < line number that i cant remember now> of your config.sys file

i guess these errors relate to corruption/abscence of mode and keyb commands.

I understand that i may have to replace these files but i havent a clue how to do this properly.  for further info i have written out my current config.sys file as it is now verbatim.

CONFIG.SYS
---------------
files=10
buffers=10
dos=high,umb
stacks=9,256
devicehigh=ramdrive.sys /E 2048
lastdrive=z
device=display.sys con=(ega,,1)
country=044,850,country.sys
install=mode.com con cp prepare=((850) ega.cpi)
install=mode.com con cp select=850
install=keyb.com uk,,keyboard.sys

I hope you can help as it is a nightmare.  I do have some knowledge of DOS and windows but have gone very rusty indeed.

thank you so much.
