installing Windows 98 on 130MHz laptop?
« on: July 10, 2006, 03:11:21 PM »
I have a laptop that has a 130MHz processor, (crap) , and 22 MB of RAM. I plan to upgrade the RAM to 80 MB before I even think about upgrading the OS.
I have read that Windows 98 requires 66MHz processor.
But then again, that's the minimum.
(I don't plan on that)
How well would Windows 98 function on a 130MHz processor with 80 MB or RAM?

130MHz with 80 Mb's of RAM, very slow. My old labtop was a IBM with a pentium one at 500 MHz and 76 Mb's of RAM. With windows 95, it was very slow.

I currently have Windows 95 with 22MB of RAM, and it works just fine on the 130MHz processor.
Hmm. (Time for research)

There is no Pentium i that ran at 500 Mhz. They only went to 233.

I am still trying to calculate the memory chip combinations to get 76 megs. total.

Of course, it depends on what you'll be using the computer for but, for word processing, spreadsheet, email, etc., Win 98 will run decent on a 130MHz processor and 80MB RAM.

By the way, how many memory slots does it have?  How do you come up with 80MB?

Contacted support, one memory slot (that's replaceable).
Support said its upgradable to 80Mb. (and they gave me a link to download it. )

zylstra555, my dear fellow, memory is hardware.  How does one download hardware?

And, memory, in recent years, come in what sizes?  Let's see.  32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB ....   You get the pattern, don't you?  Where does 80MB fit in here?

I can believe that; I did think of that possibility but was waiting for him to say it.  Back in Oct 1993, I bought a Packard Bell 486 that had 4MB embedded in the motherboard.  In fact ... LOL ... that's all the memory it had when I bought it.  Eventually maxed it out with a 32MB SIMM in the single memory slot, for a total of 36MB.

Yes! That's it. It is (watch, as I accidentally write 32 instead of 64) 64 MB upgrade, I will just send the link...  (Today is not my day. I think I will go into my room and photoshop the "I had Jello Today" picture now...)

I cant, its on an internetless computer with USB 1.0. And no CD R/W drive. No possibilities. (Unless I run Linux...)

Photoshop is going to be a word someday! (Isn't that right, Rob?)

If you're saying it isn't a word, I think Adobe might disagree.

Is "America" a word?
