its not like going on forums is just for younger ppl... it just seems that way cuz most older ppl didnt grow up with computers like us youger ppl

LOL I'm in the 45+ category. I think you fail to recognize that some of us older folks have many years of experience using computers. Now, like any age group, the actual extent of computer knowledge varies widely. And, by no means are all young people computer savvy. It still depends on interests, aptitude, training, etc.

I'm not saying that just because I've used computers for over 20 years makes me a expert on hardware, software, networking, etc. It still depends on the actual experience and training. PC's did not exist when I graduated from high school. They did not exist until many years later. But, I've owned a computer since the first, simple, machines, such as Commodore 64 was released in August 1982, which I did own. I recall when I was a federal employee and we got our first PC, an IBM with no hard drive. It ran entirely off of floppy disks.

Working a large federal agency also gave me some exposure to main frame systems, although I was not a computer specialist. Do you know what I mean by main frame?

I got a late start in the game.

I had never sat in front of a computer until August 2000. Thats when my household got our first Gateway computer.

I was so scared of it and that I was going to foul something up, I had my kids turn it on for me.

I decided about a year or so ago to get serious about trying to learn what makes them tick. And when Google'ing something one day, I came across the Computer Hope website, signed up and stayed on.

I have always known the best way to learn is to surround yourself with knowledgeable people.

I started out on some scary acer, running windows 95. I though it was pretty sweet. It had 16MB of RAM!!!(now I've got 1536MB)

All I did was play doom 95 and card games on it.

About three years ago I got this computer. AT that time I knew very little. So I got a very crapy PC. Now I trying to build my on. I know a LOT more now.

my first computer was a old Packard bell (dont know the model) it had a 100mhz P1 proccessor, 32 or 64mb of ram, double or quad speed cd rom, and thats all i can remember, i dont know exactly the specs but i know its one or the other, i have gutted three packard bells before, all differant, only thing i know is that it was a packard bell legend

Well, now that were talking PC's...
I have the following:
IBM Computer - Unknown speed, very little RAM (our second family computer. I am throwing it away)
ASUS Computer - 366MHz, 300+RAM
Packard Bell - 266MHz, Unknown RAM, (probably 64MB RAM)
Leading Edge Laptop - 16MHz (actually very good for when it was made) and unknown RAM
Gateway 2000 SOLO Series Laptop - 90MHz, 16-22MB RAM
Compaq 1215 (my newest laptop!) - 130MHz, and 30'something RAM
And last, one iMac. (Apple Maggot) with 266MHzzzz processor, and 128RAM. But what the heck? Its not hardly a PC. ITS A STUPID MAC!

These are all second hand.
They are stackable!
I keep them in my room, (almost like pets)

I am excluding two computers from my list, as they are family computers.
And one other computer, since its for parts and it eats hard drives.

I think i First Really Get my Hands on a computer in 96, it was a P2 266 MMX with 64 Megs of ram and a Massive 4 Gig HDD

I used that Till The P4 come out, and then i got My First Very own PC with a P4 1.4 20 Gig HDD 256 Megs Ram Gforce2MX . and i upgraded that PC twice - First to an AMD 64 3200 then Added a new GFX card Geforce5600

And now Ive Bought a Brad new PC that has far to many Numbers attached

I was a 1974 baby - a good year for microprocessors... (>see here<)

Commodore Pet, Vic 22, BBC Models A & B plus Master, Sinclair's ZX80, 81 and Spectrums, various Ataris, Amigas, Acorn Archimedes, etc. Got to play with all of them during my formative years.

These have been very interesting decades to grow up in, no?

A IBM with a pentium 4, 1 gig of RAM, nivida TNT2-64 grafix card(<that sucks).<2.53 GHz
A Digtal PC 5000, with a pentium pro 200 MHz, 64 Mb's of RAM, 20 gig hard drive.
A IBM thinkpad with a pentium 4, 768 MB's( I think) of RAM, ATI 7500 grafix card.<1.80 GHz< laptop
A IBM thinkpad with a pentium 4, 512 MB's of RAM, ATI 7500 grafix card<1.60 GHz, labtop
A IBM thinkpad with a pentium 4, 256 MB's of RAM, ^ Grafix card< 1.80 GHz, labtop
A IBM thinkpad witha pentium 4, 256 MB's of RAM, don't know the grafix card<1.60 GHz, laptop

All the IBM's have no hard drive's, I got all of these from a bank, for free. My dad go's to places like this get's those computer, when the place get's new one's and he sell's them to be junked. I keep a few this time.

I did that with my friends and the next day later i wake up in a hospital with 1 arm because of you robpomeroy

there was more replies then i thought.. my first computer(grandmas) was a ibm with i cant remember the specs, but ive been into computers since i waws 8 so almost ten years now. the first family copmputer was an all-in-one mac(sadly i didnt know it was a mac cuz i was very green) the only way to turn it on was to press the power button on the keyboard.

Well, my computer career started with a TANDY running DOS 3.something (so only the prompt, no fancy shell) when I was 2. For some reason I've been fascinated by computers ever since I was a toddler. I must be a re-incarnated person who invented the PC.

So, I've been on computers ever since. From DOS to Windows 3.1 to 95, then 98, ME and XP. 13 years of experience with technology. I remember when I needed a 5 1/2 inch floppy to do anything useful (like play games). I mean, yes, we had a hard drive, but it was what, 20 MB? And for some odd reason I remember my mom telling me that we upgraded -- upgraded, mind you -- to a full 1 MB of memory. Not that I knew what that meant. So, yes, I know more about the inner workings of a computer than my average classmate -- nay, my average teacher -- knows about how to use one.

Now, I have to make up for that boasting paragraph above.

Most of my knowledge of software and settings comed from me screwing up the settings. Things from setting the brightness to max, or setting the double-click speed to max (I really liked the max!), to something as extreme as putting a magnet on the CRT monitor or disabling the video card. I was a terror of the PC.

Now, I use what I learned to help others who were as inquisitive as me.

My first computer (or rather the family computer) was an IBM. Well, actually, it wasn't our first computer. Our real first computer was a piece of crap with unknown speeds and HD Space. It had Wacky Wheels and Windows 3.1. It was also an IBM.
But the second computer:
It had an 80MB hard drive, with Windows 3.11, and a few other things. Oh, and 2MB of RAM. I still have it. Its going to the dump. The HD had a head crash.
After it crashed (or rather years later) I took my first hard drive apart and then I really learned how it worked.

Thats a great story!

I'm 16 and got my first computer at 8, It also had a 5 1/2 inch floppy drive but the computer didn't last long and I managed to get the BSOD, I didn't have a clue how to fix it and neither did anyone else!

I've haven't really learnt that much but i'd say i'm gradually starting to, More by errors than anything else and taking my pc apart and building it back up, Just to start learning how everything works but at the same time trying not to mess it up!

You also have good grammar, Mine isn't very good!

The great thing about Windows 3.x that I remember, is BSOD is a good thing. Pressing ALT+CTRL+DEL gives you the screen instantly, a quick diagnostic is preformed, and then viola, the problem is found. "Press ANYKEY to fix your computer and continue on with life as we know it!"

After being stuck in school, and half paying attention, then learning that Google Toolbar has SpellCheck, I started getting a LOT better.
