    Memory upgrade
    « on: July 24, 2006, 06:40:57 AM »
    Hi all,

Thanks so much for the answers - regarding the "can't boot from Safe Mode", I gave up and reinstalled WinXP on my friend's pc. Works much better.

I do have another question tho, I want to put in more memory for tis pc, it has too slots, one is occupied by a 256M PC2700 DDR 333Mhz module, I happend to have have a 512M and a 1G PC2700/3200 400Mhz module, both are 184-pin, are they interchangable since the only different is the speed.

You guys are great, I can always get an answer for one of you, Thanks. I will do the same to other members once I know more.  :D

      The questionis:

That is not a question.  You've simply hinted at what you want to do.  Can I guess that your question is, "Can I put the 512MB and 1GB sticks into this PC?"  To which the answer would be yes, but they will only run at 400MHz if the bus supports this, and check that you aren't mismatching memory voltages.

If it fits in the slot it will work........................almost.

Go online and find your PC's motherboard settings and see the memory configurations. It is very important to check what works. for example, a 256 + 512 + 1Gb won't work becase it doesn't add up to a square.

Placement in general is also important. I once looked at the configuration and added my new 512mb memory and the computer made 3 beeps when it turned on, and stayed like that. (Turns out i looked at the configuration slots upside down, so i had to rearragne the memory).

      Best of Luck.

The best idea is to go to www.crucial.com and see EXACTLY what memory is required and compare ALL of the characteristics on what you have vs. what you need. Speed is not the only determining factor. The motherboard may have limitations as well.

Just putting RAM in a slot because it physically fits is NEVER a good idea.  ;)

"A square"?  I've never heard such an idea...
