problem installing Windows Office Professional2000
« on: August 14, 2006, 09:09:27 PM »
I am trying to update a new computer which currently has Windows Office Professional 97 to Windows Office Professional 2000.  I tried to first uninstall WOP97 but you need the disc and I do not have it.  I then tried to just install WOP2000 but it won't go past the Preparing to Install phase.  It says the installation driver cannot be found.  Is there anything I can do?

Well, it's really Microsoft Office Professional, not Windows. So lets use that to decrease confusion.

Yes, you need to have the original CD to uninstall Office 97. Don't have that?

Is that a real Microsoft Office 2000 CD? Usually a damaged or counterfeit CD can produce that type of message. What is the EXACT error message?

Yes I apologize, it is Microsoft Office Professional, thank you.

The computer I"m trying to uninstall MOP97 from was just given to us by my uncle.  He apparently borrowed the cd from someone and does not have it, so that is not an option.

However the MOP 2000 cd I have is definitely real. The exact message that comes up after it prepares to install is "Cannot find install server."

Thanks in advance for the help.

Of course a clean format and reinstall of WIndows might be a good idea for a lot of reasons. It will certainly get rid of the "leftovers" from another person's installation.

Do you have a real Windows CD to go along with this?

Yes, they did give us the Reinstallation CD for Windows XP for a Dell (it's a Dimension 8200).

Can you tell me how to go about doing that?  And also what's actually left on the computer when a complete reinstallation is done, if anything?  I've already spent time downloading Ewido, Ad-Aware, CCleaner, etc.  I'm guessing I will have to go through that again?

It will blank everything out, so if you need to back anything up, do that now.

You may need to go to the Dell site if you need additional drivers afterward, but if that is a restore CD you should get it back exactly as you got it from Dell.

Just reboot with the CD in the drive and follow the prompts. Some require pressing F11 if just a simple reboot does not start the process.

Ok well the Re-installation disc makes it clear that no programs or drivers are going to be reinstalled, but any drivers I need I can get at the Dell website?  There's very few programs on here left from when my uncle so I'm not worried about those.  Will the internet work fine?

All of the Drivers you need are here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8200&os=WW1&osl=EN

You might want to look in Control Panel/System to see what audio, video, modem and ethernet adapter you have in there so you get the right ones from the possibilities. If you post your Service Tag (found on the machine or in the BIOS-F2 when you see the Dell logo) that can be helpful also.

Just how does the Re-installation disc makes that clear?  I've worked on a few Dells and the Re-installation disc did include all device drivers.

Well the disc says right on it, "Only use this CD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell computer.  This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers.

I was not able to boot from the CD no matter what I tried so I just tried using the cd from the desktop.  When i get the menu and click Install WindowsXP it says I can't because I have a newer version running.  Is this ever going to work?  >:(

Check your BIOS settings for boot devices.  Set CD-ROM as the first boot device.

If you can boot from floppy, use Smart Boot Manager.  There's a link in the software FAQ (see my signature).

I will try using that but how exactly does it work once i have it downloaded?  And does it really matter, considering the error message saying the version of XP i have is newer than then one on the disc?

If you run the program you download, from the command prompt, it will display brief help.  You'll need a blank floppy.

Don't worry about that.  XP is XP.  Your installed version may just have a service pack that the CD version doesn't have.  You can install it afterwards.  Good luck.
