I just re-loaded Windows 98SE, System Prop-message
« on: August 25, 2006, 11:44:41 PM »
I just re-loaded Windows 98SE.
In the System Properties, in the display window under the "Performance Tab", I have this message;

Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance.

Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

What do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks,

I'd start again with a clean install. ;)

      fdisk too?

I made the boot disk that I used, on the 98SE computer when I was trying at first to do a repair install.

For good measure, I just made a new 98SE bootdisk from bootdisk.com on my known clean computer.

Any bootdisk that works will do, fix up your partitions, reformat & away you go.
If your hardware can handle it W2K is a far better option. *trust me*  ;)

        Fed,

Fdisked and formatted and re-installed again.

Same stinking message in the system properties/performance tab.   :'(

I have been looking in the link you gave and Googleing for the same. Tried and checked several things listed.

        No luck so far.

This is the link I used
        http://www.internetguideandmore.com/fdiskformat.htm

I followed it to the T. Am I missing something?

        Thanks.

        Fordtruckmaniac...

Instead of using fdisk to format the hard drive, try doing a low-level format of the drive and then using another program like Partion Magic to partition and then reformat and do a clean install.

Depending on the drive...Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor...whatever...you can obtain a hard drive diagnostics utility from the respective manufacturer and then low-level format the hard drive...

By the way...a low-level format basically returns the hard drive to its original state...before formatting...where a format just erases data.

Scan the 98 boot disk for any viruses (on another PC) prior to using it to fdisk (reformat) your hard drive.

Could this have been an option you chose during the 98 install?
It's been many years since I've installed an OS let alone 98, perhaps someone here who does this stuff for a job and deals with it every day can help out.

Is this a 2 gig or less drive or partition that was formatted with FAT16?

I am not familiar with doing a low level format. But I can read and follow insructions.  :)  I will scan the floppy for a virus. I am not seeing my hardrive name listed in Everest or Belarc advisor. It shows the capacity and says its a  FAT 32 in another section.

I don't think so, I watched closely when I re-installed. But I could have missed it.

It shows 29GB in local disk C properties, it was FAT32 before and is now. I believe is a Seagate. I could not find it with Everest, just put Belarc in it, its not showing the name of the hard drive i it either. I know it did before the fdisk and format. Could this be part of the ailment. Do I need to find a driver for it. I'm thinking probably so?

Do the newer OS's have more drivers to draw from when you re-load, so a person does not to fight this driver crap?

They have more drivers for some things that were out before it was released, BUT modems, etc. will always have to have specific drivers for the correct OS.

I did physically look at the hard drive.

It is a Seagate Barracuda ATA model ST320430A.

It is not showing in the device manager in "Disk Drives" its not showing in Everest or Belarc Advisor.

Also in device manager I have a cluster of yellow question marks.

They start at other devices. PCI input controller, mass storage controller, multimedia audio device, universal serial bus, unknown device. I got the driver for the PCI Local Bus Ultra 100, it did not help the question marks.

I have gotten all the drivers but one for the video card, Hercules 3D Prophet 4500, (or anyway its the card the monitor plugs into). I have installed them to the hard drive and nothing has changed.
