Monitor is going to sleep!

  Hi wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction with this???

Just bought a new pc (hp) which is running windows xp. Set up was pretty straight forward however, half way through doing something (95% of the time)  a message appears saying that the monitor is going to sleep .

The computer then displays the hp opening page and jumps into what i can only descripe as DOS format and says that the computer has shut down to protect my computer and do i want to run in safe mode, last known configuration or start windows normally. I have been shutting of the machine from the main button as only way i can close as the monitor just goes to sleep.
Not on the net at home so could not be a virus i have picked up??

When you say new computer, do you mean as in new- or different?

Is it under warranty?
 
Sounds like a Bios setting or monitor problem.

Can you try another monitor?

Its a brand new PC straight out of the shop...think it is under waranty...just wanted to find out if it is something simple or a bit more serious.

I dont know if this will work but give it a try.. Shutdown the computer and unplug the powersupply and open up the case and you have to perform a little surgery.. take out the battery it is on the motherboard somewhere.. and wait for about 1 min and put it back in and plug the power and staret it up i dont knowif it will work but try.. and onemore thing.. try reinstalling Windows.. my Cauzins got an HP too brand new and like you said the montiro goes to sleep after it gets to 95 top 96% and then restarts.. I have to do a system recovery.. and it fixed it..

I cannot advise opening up case if the machine is under warrranty, as this may void the warranty, then when you do have a problem that you can't correct, hp won't be so happy to fix it for you.

just check the terms of the warranty, just wanted to give you a heads up.

oh, and don't even ask how I found out about this little rule...
