laptop internet problems
« on: September 17, 2006, 12:33:54 AM »
Hello: After years of working on an old computer teaching online I finally was able to get a laptop with good memory and speed. I have an HP Pavilliondv400 and use XPWindows in it. My problem is, that when I connect to my server, and the little lights go on at the bottom to say that I'm connected, I can't access any internet pages and I can't send and receive mail.  I get that "sorry" page.  The email error says that there is no connection to the server and the internet gives that page that it gives when you accidently click on your browser but you're not connected
When I check the connection, it says I'm connected and the time is ticking away. But the status report says that there is nothing in the send and receive activity going on.
Can you help me figure out what I can do here?  I know my server is online because this is the same server that I'm using now to write to you.
The laptop comes with a wireless setup too and a couple of fast speed things, lans, etc.  But I'm not using them. I'm using a dialup modem connection.

Many thanks :)

Dusty

Could be your Internet Protocol needs to be set to TCP/IP - do you know how to set this :-?
One good deed is worth more than a year of good intentions.

Go to dialup connection properties. Go to properties for your connection. Uncheck 'log on to server'. Under allowed protocols, uncheck everything except tcp/ip. Go to your network properties and if you see 'client for microsoft networks', click to highlight. Click properties. Uncheck 'log on to server' setting. Reboot.

Hello I don't have a place called dialup connections, or at least I couldn't find it. I have someplace called network connections. I use a link there called "create a new connection" when I set up my connection.

Are you referring to steps for an XP here?  maybe you could give me more specific directions to get to "dialup connections".

    Thanks

Then you should be able to find the connection that you use to dial in with. That is the one whose properties you need to change.
