I've checked out numerous threads and none have helped so far. Basically, I'm running a PC on Windows XP Professional, and wish to access it via the network on my laptop, running Windows XP Home.
The checkbox for allowing remote desktopping is ticked on the PC, and all firewalls are disabled. Both computers can access each other's files via the network, so there's no problems there. I know the IP address of the PC too.
So I run Remote Desktop Connection on the laptop, and enter the IP. A while passes and then I get an error message:
"The client could not connect to the remote computer.
Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection
Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator"
Note that instead of entering an IP on Remote Desktop Connection, I could select <browse for more...> and my network appears in a new window. Clicking on the + sign next to it though, brings up the following error message: The NETWORK domain/workgroup does not contain any Terminal servers."
And also note, that if I enter most IP addresses in the RDC box, the same amount of time passes, and I get the same error message I get when I enter the right IP address. I tried entering the IP address in the computer that I'm trying to connect to, and it told me I was already logged into that machine, so it's definitely the correct IP.
So, I tried entering the users that are allowed, by going to the Remote tab in System Information, and clicking the Users button. I assume that I would have to allow my User on the Laptop to be able to access the PC via Remote Desktop, but I was only able to select users on the PC to be allowed. There is a box that lets you select the Location of the User, but clicking on it only brings up a windows which allows you to select a location for the user you want to select, and only the PC appears. I cannot see any other computers on the network in the window, and therefore cannot select users from any other computers to be allowed to access the PC via RDC.
I am the Administrator on both machines, and none have a Firewall on them. Any help on getting this working would be much appreciated...
And also, I'm not sure how to forward ports, which has been suggested. My computer knowledge is limited, so could you be as specific as possible with help! Thanks
