A wireless router and a network card for the laptop with the desktop being hooked up to the router would be the most cost effective solution for your needs...

Getting the same brand router and card is recommended.

is it possible for the desktop not to be hooked to the router or is that just stupid.

No you could go wireless with the desktop as well, purchasing a wireless card for it.

If you have to do any settings with the router it is best to use a wired connection. After that you can go totally wireless.
