    I am running Win98SE on a computer which is connected with a LAN to another.  I have had no problem with sending files back and forth, etc. I have just replaced the hard drive on the computer, and suddenly neither computer will recognize the other. I used Maxtor's MaxBlast to copy all the files from the old hard drive to the new one, and that's all I did. Everything works well except the networking.

    Both computers recognize that the one with the new hard drive is there, and is part of the network, but, other than displaying the computer's name  (without any properties) nothing happens.

    I don't understand what has caused the problem, and would appreciate any suggestions.

    This has just happened, so I haven't done any of the normal things like disabling firewalls, and virus propgrams yet. I'll keep working at it, but I thought someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

    Did you enable sharing on the machine with the new hard drive? You have to do that and reboot.

      Sharing is enabled. It wasn't necessary to re-enable it, since MaxBlast made a complete copy of everything on the old hard drive, and put it on the new.

      Incidentally, the computer has 2 hard drives. I did nothing with the 2nd one, and it isn't recognized by the network, either.

      I think you can safely conclude that Maxblast did NOT make a complete copy.  It has missed something and therefore cannot be trusted.  Sorry.

        Reinstall Windows?  Who knows what Maxblast has screwed up.  Sorry - if the drive image process has failed, it's almost impossible to hypothesise in what way.

          Fortunately for me, MaxBlast did not screw up anything. I'm now up and running. Apparently what happened was that a new name was assigned to each of the hard drives, and the old connections didn't work. I found out what the names for the drives were (Actually I just re-named them); then I went to the other computer and added a network place, using the new names. I mapped the drives, and all is well.

          Sometimes, when you least expect it, things go right.
