can not get the microphone to work

i can not get the microphone to work it is muted and i cannot un mute it i have had my hard drive formated and win xp pro sp2 installed
the speakers are fine i dont have a sound card just the onboard sound
any help please

     djc45 ....... Have you checked in the control panel , sounds and audio devices to be certain that the mic is not muted ?
    Do you have a mute button on your keyboard that may be at issue ?
    Have you clicked start/run ...and in the run box type ...... dxdiag and then click enter ...when the new window opens , click on the sound tabs one at a time and run the tests ......let us know the results.
    Is the issue your speakers or the mic or both ....your post is a little vague.
    do you have the speakers and mic plugged into the correct jacks ?
    Did your sound and mic work before you formatted?
    Are you certain the drivers for the sound card are all installed ?
