Windows 2000 -- (MS Explorer problem +)

I am unable to get any windows to appear for Explorer (both windows & Internet Explorer).

When I do the usual START -> right click --> select explorer, the screen "blanks" (turns blue) for a moment, and then goes back to what it was, but no window appears. A process does seem to running in the background, if I look at the task manager.

Any help would be appreciated --- thanks!

P.S. This problem appeared suddenly, on a machine that was  fine for over a year. I have tried rebooting, with not avail
