Windows XP Pro. Activation Key, Need Advice. / RESOLVED

Hi Everyone
I just installed Windows XP Pro without running in to any problems, but when i
installed the OS and went to Activate Windows it's telling me that product key has already been used. This is the original XP Cd i bought over a year ago and installed it on my other PC. It also has Service Pack 2 installed. I went to Microsoft Website, it's telling me how i can reset or change the product key by going in to the Registry, is this legal?. I was also told that this method wont work with Service Pack 2 ? Does that mean i have to Purchase a nother OS ? Before i go start playing around with things could you please give some advice on what to do. Thank You.

It is only licensed for one PC.Maybe if you inform Microsoft about
discontinuing use of XP on the old PC,they will fix you up.

Call 1-800-MICROSOFT.  Explain your situation to an operator and if you can verify that you have a legitimate copy (they'll tell you how), they may help you sort it out.  I've found that they're actually pretty helpful in such matters.

Thank you for your help, i rang Microsoft gave them my original product key i was given a nother product key to use. All ok now.

Actually, the Miscrosoft telephone support is pretty good.

I have found the exact same to be true every time i have used it...

I tried to install Windows XP home on a second older computer that I have.(the operating system came with my new laptop), but couldn't activate it. I am wondering if they gave you another product key, so that you could activate it, could I still use it on my laptop?( it is currently installed and working well on my laptop.. which is the computer it came with)

One licsense -= one machine...that is their policy.

Tufek had an issue of his key not being seen as legit. Two different things.
