Sure, just as long as the comp you have now is compatible with it.
Specs would be nice please, and all caps is not needed.

      What he said.
Make sure your motherboard supports it.
Also, think about this upgrade, is this Celeron D actually faster than your P4?

      What they said.

It is not all about clock speed.  ;)

Whar were you planning on putting in there?

I am planning to put a  Intel Celeron D 478 PIN. Is that acceptable?

Well this one to be exact,
              Model: Intel Celeron D
              Core: Prescott
              Operating Frequency: 2.40GHz
              FSB: 533MHz
              Cache: L1/12K+16K; L2/256K
              Process: 90 nm
              Socket: Socket 478

If compatible would it be a big difference in speed?

You are trading some level 2 cache and other differences for a marginal increase in clock speed. If gaming is the issue, this may not be the solution. It may work, but it may or may not be worth the expense if it does.

Did you read what it said about the Celeron with a 400 Mhz. bus?

Celeron and Celeron D are not the same.
Besides, this upgrade would not make a big difference, the P4 not only has more cache but is a better design, so is faster at the same clock speed.
It would be a little faster, but not worth spending money on.
If you want an upgrade, buy a new motherboard, that's my advice.

Thx to all for your replies. I will look into a new mother board/ I will ask for sugeestions on a dual core when the money is right . goodnight.

A pentium 4 with H/T is alot better than a celeron D, Although its newer celeron D dosent have dual cores or two threads
