Disappearing Options
« on: May 30, 2007, 08:34:40 PM »
Okay. I have an older laptop with Windows Me (it's an HP) and I'm noticing that some options have started to disappear such as there is no more thumbnail option when I want to view my files, my computer no longer recognizes what program to use when I try and open something (like a picture) and just today my desktop icons suddenly just appeared on my desktop and there is no longer and option to hide them. I'm not sure if these problems are related or not, but I'm afraid more are going to go away if I don't do something.

I don't know what info to give, but I'll try my best to figure it out if I can. Also, I'm really inexperienced with computers so go easy on me.
Thank you for your help!

Well I dont know much about this stuff but have you tryed doing a virus scan or defragmenting your computer? You might also try up-dating your computer.  But I would try doing a scan of your computer first. What different types of virus, malware etc scanning programs do you have?

Does your laptop have internet? If so you can run a free online virus scan from www.pandasoftware.com/activescan.

Thanks, I'll do a scan right now. And no, I'm ashamed to say I have no protection so the chances of it being a virus aren't small.

bluesummerchild, download AVG Free and Spybot - Search & Destroy, update them, and scan with them (not at the same time) in Safe Mode.  Post back with a HijackThis log and an update on how your computer is performing.

What about AVS (www.activevirusshield.com) and Spyware Terminator (http://www.spywareterminator.com)? Those are the ones I use. They are free too.

Oh and I was wondering: how do you convert text into hyperlinks with this forum code?

bluesummerchild, let us know how it goes after you follow the instructions in my first post.

I believe Spyware Terminator used to be considered rogue anti-spyware, which would have me weary of using it.  You may want to consider looking into some of the programs in unlovedwarrior's signature.

Hey thanks. I guess I will uninstall it then.

I have Ccleaner and ad-aware. I didn't know AVG has an anti-spyware program though. I'll have to check that out.

So..... What's the difference between AVG and AVG free?

...You don't pay for the free one, and you don't get the extra bits with the free one.

Check out the AVG site.  ...Google it, I'm lazy.

Ok...I'm sorry it took so long to reply, I haven't been home for a few days.

I added the Superantispyware and the AVG free edition. It cleaned out a lot of spyware (no viruses) but I have a trojan and I'm not sure how to get rid of it. Also, I suppose my computer is running better...but the things that disappeared are still gone. Is that permanent?

Thanks for that help you guys.......(by the way)

AVG Anti-Spyware is designed to remove trojans...it's a different program than AVG Free.

How did you determine you have a trojan ? ?

I did a scan and it said I had "one threat" which was a trojan. I guess I should get AVG Anti-Spyware

EDIT: Ok nevermind, I remember now. I tried to get AVG Anti-Spyware and it said I needed Windows 2000 or higher, so it wouldn't let me download it. So I ended up with superantispyware.

superantispyware should have removed it... what was the name of the trojan??
