Windows 2000 - Accidental Reinstall
« on: June 04, 2007, 06:20:01 PM »
Hey; I've got Windows 2000 loaded on my computer and it was having a few problems so I popped in the repair disk and ran a repair; thought everything was going fine. The repair finished and my computer rebooted, and it came up with a message for Windows 2000 Setup, which I don't want to do, else I'll have all my files wiped. I rebooted my computer and took the CD out, but the setup thing still keeps coming up, though it fails because the CD isn't it. Any help to get back to my normal login and desktop? I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows...

Does the Windows 2000 installer offer the choice to do a reinstall of Windows?
If it does, do that, but only as a last resort!
(Someone else should come by in a while, and hopefully, in benefit of you, they will have a better solution)

It sounds as if you didn't choose "R" for a repair install...

Travel Here for step by step instructions...

If in fact R was not chosen and it still wants to run setup your bacon may be cooked.

I feared as much; I'll try the repair one more time and if that doesn't work I'll just go ahead with the install. Thanks guys   :-\

One thing you can try...absolutely no guarantees on this would be to move the drive into another machine as a slave and see if you can recover any data...

As i said no guarantees.

p.s. Don't try to boot to it, it will get you further away from where you want to be.
