    SP2 being read as SP1???
    « on: July 28, 2007, 09:30:36 AM »
i posted in computer software about a problem i've been having and got sent over here to post a hijackthis log. if anyone could tell me any problems they see with it that would make my computer "send out a signal that i have SP1, instead of SP2." i attached my hijackthis log as a txt document.

Well, you have Viewpoint Manager, which I would get rid of.  It's not necessarily malicious, but it is considered foistware.  Other than that, I'm not seeing anything malicious running on your computer.  Just to be on the safe side, you might want to update your AVG and scan with it in Safe Mode.

Also, you need a firewall.  You're vulnerable without a firewall, so you should look into getting either ZoneAlarm, Kerio Personal Firewall, or Comodo.  They're all good free firewalls.  Just be sure you only have one installed at a time!  Download the firewall of your choice, disconnect from the internet, disable Windows Firewall, and install your new firewall.

Let me know how the Safe Mode scan goes.

If you would like to remove it, simply go open up your Control Panel from the Start menu and go to Add/Remove Programs.  Look for Viewpoint in the list and choose to uninstall it.  You should then scan with HijackThis, close all other windows, and check and fix the following entries...

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
(This is unrelated, but go ahead and fix it anyway.)

      O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

You should then delete the folder C:\Program Files\Viewpoint.  After that, Viewpoint should be no more.  However, it would be a good idea to run through the Cleaner and Issues with CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar).

uninstalled viewpoint and ran ccleaner through.

are we getting any closer to fixing the problem with SP1/SP2?

i didn't see SP2 in the list in CCleaner under tools. would it be listed as anything other than (windows?) service pack 2? i didn't see anything for SP1, if there should be.

is uninstalling SP2 going to do anything to the way my computer runs until i reinstall it?

Sorry, saytheya, I must have missed your last reply.  Running Windows XP without SP2 isn't recommended because it's not as safe.  However, uninstalling it and then reinstalling it may be worth a shot.  Check this page for removal instructions...
              http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350

If you don't find Windows XP Service Pack 2 in your uninstall list, give the Use the hidden $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder steps a try.  You should then reinstall SP2...

well...i went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350 and tried to remove it through add/remove programs, wasn't there, but we already knew that. then i tried the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder...and it didn't work. i got this error:

should i try the system restore step?

This is an odd one.  Although HijackThis shows you as having SP2, everything else seems to suggest that it's not on your computer.  I haven't seen this problem before and I have to wonder if maybe it wasn't fully/properly installed.  Have you tried the SP2 installation page to see what happens?

You can try the System Restore steps, but keep in mind that it will remove any programs installed after the date you restore to.  For example...if you go back one month, you will lost all programs installed in the last month.  Personal files/data will be left alone, however.

i tried going to the microsoft page to download SP2, but it brings me to the update page. is there a direct link to the page where i can download SP2?

would talking to someone from microsoft do anything? although, whenever i call tech support with problems, it seems that they tend to not have a clue about what to do.

                  Give this link a try...

If you still have trouble, you might want to order a CD (just pay for shipping...about US$3)...

have you only tried doing the high priority ones first and only a couple at a time?
