It seems as though your trying to format your primary drive from within windows, which can't be done.

What you have to do is restart in MSDOS mode and type :

format c:

That's if this is the drive you are trying to format.

When you restart the computer in MSDOS mode there only is one prompt.
My memory of Windows98 start menu options is a little blurry, but click the Start button, then click "Shutdown" then select the "Restart in MSDOS mode"

When the computer restarts, it should look the same as when you open a command prompt through windows (only it wont be inside a window, it will take up the entire screen.) then just type the command I posted in my last post and follow the instructions.

Good luck!  ;D

Reboot the computer

As the computer is booting, press the F8 key when you hear a beep or when you see "Starting Windows 95" or "Starting Windows 98". Windows 98 users sometimes may find it easier to press and hold the left CTRL key as the computer is booting.

If done properly the user should get to a screen similar to the below screen.

Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu
=============================
1. Normal
2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)
3. Safe mode
4. Step-by-step confirmation
5. Command prompt only
6. Safe mode command prompt only

Enter a choice: 5

F5=Safe Mode Shift+F5=Command prompt Shift+F8= Step-by-step confirmation [N]

Select the option for command prompt only.
