    Opening DVD video disc
    « on: November 23, 2007, 09:27:03 PM »
    Hi there,
Wwhenever I insert a DVD video disc into my DVD ROM drive, a window appears saying that a program file is needeed to open the disc although I have my DVD player launched.
What program file does it refer to?
Is my DVD plalyer supposed to open the disc right away once I insert the disc into the drive?  I am wondering if something wrong with my pllayer, so please help me.

      Hello,
In my case, I don't think it really matters whether it is the MPC or VLC.

      Will it play music CD?
Is your DVD drive listed in Device Manager without any errors?
Can you see it in Windows Explorer?
      What Windows version?

        Hi,
The DVD drive can play music CD; it is shown in the Device Manager and reconized by my PC which uses OS Win98se.  I hope that will help.

First of all, would you please tell mee whether or not the DVD video will be open as soon as ithe DVD video disc is inserted into the drive?  Thanks.

        Yes, it should.
Did this DVD drive come with your computer, or you just bough it?
It may need some drivers, it may need some codecs.

          Hi,
Perhaps I give you more details:

It was a CD ROM drive before, I changed it to a DVD ROM drive; I did not install any new driver for it; the only codec I installed is MPEG2 codec.

If I insert a DVD movie disc that comes with its own player into the drive, the disc will be opened right away by its own pllayerm byt bit by my own pllayer!

What player do you want to use? You may need to change file association.

            Hi,
                 I am using MPC.

I doubt if anything can be done about the file association since I have already checked all the available video types on the Option Menu.  Any way, I would like to hear what suggestions you have.

I assume, you're talking about Options in MPC, right?
If so, it may be not enough.
Put your video DVD into your DVD drive.
            Open windows Explorer.
            Click on your DVD drive.
There will be subfolder, called: VIDEO_TS
            Click on that subfolder.
In right pane, you'll see one, or more files with ".VOB" extension.
Right click on any of those files, click on Open With.
Select MPC, or VLC as the program you want to play your movies with.
Click to select the Always use this program to open these files  check box to make this the default program to open files with the same file-name extension.
            Click OK.
Re-insert your DVD, and you should be set.

This is getting off track...which is why we thrive on details here.

Not all DVD's have an autorun file so a few questions for Asking:

            Is this a movie DVD ? ?
Is it a copy or a factory produced movie ? ?
Did you install any software/hardware prior to this happening ? ?
Does the DVD player show up properly in Device Manager ? ?
If you open Windows Explorer and double clik the file in the DVD drive does it play ? ?

            Let us know,....

              Hi,
First of all, let me respond to Broni.  There is no such subfolder.

Now, let me make other replies:
The DVD video disc in question is a copy made from VHS tape; when I replaced the CD ROM drive with my present DVD drive, I did not have the necessary software, I guess that is why the problem.

I could not find the video player being listed in the Device Manager.  Is it supposed to be there in order for it to wwork automatically?

Folks, your advices will be very much appreciated.

Just as i suspected it's a homemade video...these will not open MPC automatically.
              Try this:
Open MPC then select File/Open and find the DVD player in the dropdown list...point it to the movie file and select open/or Run.
              See what happens

                Hello,
What you have described is a manual openning of the video disc if I am not mistaken.  I knew how to manually open a video disc or file already!  Besides, I think you are talking about a different MPC from mine, or at least it is a different version.
As far as launching MPC automatically with a video disc (especially homemade) is concerned, I guess my hoipe is out of question!

Actually it isn't ...it depends on what software you are using when you create the DVD. Some video compilation/burning programs have this option built in to them. Which programs have you used ? ?
