windows loaded fine but everything now looks like i'm still in safe mode.

Click   Start->Settings->Control Panel->Display->Settings tab

What does it presently say for     Colors          and       Screen area     ?

16 colors

640x480 pixels

i'm on a gateway by the way.

i tried going into dos and scanreg/restore. but all the dates are from years ago.  i might have to live with funky colors and fonts.

i'm off to work.  thank you.

I think that's your problem.

Perhaps somebody else will be along and post here,  to explain the proper way to determine the right settings.   There probably is a right way to go about it, based on the specs of your monitor and video card.

I too have and use Win98.    Its an older computer.

Me...  I'd make note of those current settings.
Then I'd experiment.   :)
When I got it where I liked it,  I'd note that too.

For what it is worth,   I use        High Color 16 bit              and    800x600   .

If there have been no modifications made to the computer  - in other words, it uses the same video card that it was manufactured with -    and you post the model number to identify your computer,  then perhaps someone here might be able to help you find the proper settings.

If you decide to experiment with those settings,  post back and let us know your results.

Sounds like you just need to adjust your screen resolution and colors now.

I can't say for sure what you should use, because I don't know how old your computer is or what the video card is capable of. You can try 800x600 or 1024x768, and 16-bit or 32-bit color. That should get you back to the way it looked before. If you can't choose any of these options in the video settings, then your video driver needs to be reinstalled or you're still in safe mode for some reason.

First, try the resolution and color depth settings. If the screen is to large to see or access the apply button, simply press the A key. If this doesn't work, Boot to command prompt only (depress and hold the ctrl button while booting). At command prompt, type scanreg/fix and press enter. Afterward, a reboot will be required, but try to boot into normal mode. Sometimes it will try to stay at the low resolution but it should change easily in normal mode. There are a couple of things more that can be tried, but this should get you started.

The next two settings in Win98 are High color and True color...
Try True color first. If your vid card is strong enough it will look fine...if it doesn't back it off to High color.

Howdy.  i've tried everything suggested above and i still have the ugly safe mode look.  new settings do not hold after a reboot.  i think that file backup windows had me do, did me in.  :)

In Win98, there's a "Apply changes without restarting" option. In most cases, applying resolution or color changes in Win98 does not require a restart.

I did say "In most cases", not all  :P

Did you check your video driver? Is Windows 98 correctly recognizing your video card?

Good to hear, glad to help.  ;D

Keep that in mind, too. One of the most common causes of hardware not acting as it should are drivers. While it isn't necessary to update drivers unless something acts up, it's always a good idea to check for updated ones and see what changes they may have made to the driver. It's also the first place you should look should something that was working normally before stop functioning properly.
