UPGRADING COMPUTER 98SE to 2000
« on: December 21, 2004, 07:36:52 PM »
Help!
Have a HP Pavilion with a celiron processor running with win 98SE. Tryed update with WIN 2000 update program. Recieved a message after installing, after some time, that I need a WIN 98 disk to finish installation. Computer came as a package. Have the rights to 98 but it is part of a recover disk. Tryed to install the recover disk, but it did not work.
Hit escape of the 2000 upgrade program and looked like program installed. Tryed starting computer. Looks like it is starting in 2000 but hands at about 98%, and will not start. Got tired of trying to use the program and tryed to reinstall 98. Now recieve a message

"Recover ran out of Disk space while recovering files".

Will only start in safe mode. See that both operating systems 98/2000 installed.
How can I clear the disk space so I can reinstall 98SE?
P.S. What is the disk space.

Great,
Thought it was my hard drive.
When I had problems installing 2000 Pro, I tryed to reinstall 98Se. Told there was not enought disk space. Now I can only get into the computer by hitting F8. There I see both 98 and 2000 under operating system. How can I remove 2000 fom my disk space so I can reinstall 98. Think if removed I will have enought disk space for 98. HELP!.

1.  Win2k has created a dual boot.  Read this.

2. Minimum Hardware Requirements for a Windows 98 Installation

O.K.
I was able to get into DOS by starting up with 2000 Pro installed. There I see it partition. Now have a drive D: where 2000 is installed. The instructions given where great, but have a problem. Stated in the instructions, I need to boot with 98 in drive. I have a HP which was bought as a bundle. 98 installed in a recovery disk. Do not have a stand alone 98 disk. Have the rights and certificate, but will not start in the recovery disk.
Any way I can get into DOS and remove the D: drive that has 2000 installed?, or is there any other way to get a copy of 98SE or copy from my other computers C: drive?

Thanks for all the great help. Created a boot disk. Thanks.
Second part of my problem. Have 98SE and 2000 pro installed. 98 on C: and 2000 on new D: drive. It partitioned. How do I remove the D: drive with 2000 so I can start all over again?

Thanks for all the help. Happy holidays to all.
This is driving me crazy. Tried following instructions give. Created a boot disk to start up. Worked great. Open in DOS. Tryed using the 2000 removal guide given. Can't get in. When I put in sys c: I can get into c: I can not put in information to remove. Told bad command.
On the information sent about FDISK, I see the message I get when I try to start without using the boot disk. "Non system disk when booting up your computer." When I try to put in the 2000 or 98 recovery disk it keeps repeating the same message.
Tired of playing with this computer. Is there anyway to completely clean the hard drive and start over again?

Thanks to all.
Was able to completely clean the hard drive and reinstall 98SE. FDISK was the ticket. Lost all but able to use computer again.
Now that I know how to clean my hard drive and since I do not have anything installed, will try again to install 2000 Pro. Lets see what happens.

Was able to install 98 and now 2000 Pro. See were I made a mistake. When installing 2000 it gives you an option to install as a FAT 32 or FAT 16. When I installed the first time I installed as a FAT 32. This created a new partition. Because of this I had 98 as a FAT16 installed and 2000 as a FAT 32 install. Installed 2000 as a FAT 16 and all works great. Thanks to all again. Learned alot.

See why you would want a NTSF to FAT. Now 2000 is in my computer, and working great, how do I covert it to NTSF without all the problems I had before?

No expert on NTFS, but I believe converting from FAT to NTFS can cause trouble with file cluster sizes? It would probably be best to format your harddrive directly to NTFS.

NTFS allows for many additional security features on drives, directories and files.  Not necessary for a single user machine, but handy in a multi-user environment.  Administrator can control software installs and prevent users from doing those that access system.  Directories and files can be blocked from certain users or all users except administrator.
