    VLC and Win98SE
    « on: December 27, 2007, 11:31:47 AM »
    Hello there,
I'm trying to use VLC with my Win98SE; the result is:  VLC has sound but no picture!
Could anybody give me some ideas as to why? Or better still, give me a solution?

    Try downloading K-Lite Codecs pack:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm
    (The Full version)
and installing it. It should correct this issue, which sounds like its a codecs issue.

      Hi,
Thanks.  Unfortunately, this version is not meant for my system; anyway, I downloaded and installed the older version that still works for Win98.  However, it does not help solving my problem at all.

      Try This

VLC does not support Win98...it says this may work however.

The problem might be directly related with the fact that your system is out of date.
Hopefully, another member will be able to tell you an older codecs pack, but it might be impossible to find a codecs pack compatible with your operating system.

Btw Zylstra, VLC doesn't use system codecs at all. It only uses its own internal codecs. That's why VLC is great for troubleshooting media player issues. If it works in VLC but not in [insert name here] it's most likely a codec issue.
EDIT: I now see that Directshow support actually have been added to VLC so on Windows it can use external codecs. I'm just going to shut up now. :)

Windows 95/98/Me users: Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems. The two MSLU files need to be put in the C:\Windows\System\ folder.
