system restore

Is there a way of doing a system restore on Windows XP if you cannot go via the normal channels? McAfee have completely messed up my computer (I downloaded an upgrade and since then have been unable to view web pages or open my e-mails despite uninstalling the mcAfee software) I am advised by PC Performance that there is no way of doing a system restore on XP if I cannot go via Accessories etc. (if I do this I just get an empty box). I do not really want to do a recovery and unless I really have to.  >:(
