I wonder if you can help me with this problem I am having. please?

I have some AVI files (films) which I can play on my computer OK, but when I try to use DVDsanta to put them on to disc, - (or try to convert them using WinAVI to try and use DVDsanta), then it immediately shuts down the programme and goes back to desktop. I have even tried to put them in “moviemaker” to cut off the very start and finish, but it immediately freezes this programme, and I have to shut down the computer, and restart. Other formats eg wmv, mpg etc. do not seem to be affected.

I have scanned my computer with AVG antivirus, AVG anti-spyware, and also Spybot, but not one of them has found anything at all.

I also have an external hard drive, which I use for storing back up files in case my computer crashes – this is not connected unless I want to use it – to transfer files back and forth. This morning I tried to open a folder containing Planet Earth documentaries, which are XviD files, and it immediately closes the folder and goes back to desktop. The other eight folders on this hard drive, does not seem to be affected at the moment. They open OK.

My system is WindowsXP Home Edition SP 2, but please be advised that I am NOT a computer expert.

belvin ......... You didn't mention it , but it soounds like this issue is something that has just started ...is that correct?
Next .... the AVI file issue ....... it sounds as if it's only some AVI files which are problematic.....is that correct ?
Which version of DVDSanta are you using ......... and are you using blank dvd disks or are you using blank cd disks.
DVDSanta should convert and burn a AVI file to dvd with no problem............. ( or is it the copywrite protection that is the issue ?

Many thanks dl65 for replying, very much appreciated. In answer to your questions

(1)   First noticed it about 2 months ago, when I downloaded several files including an AVI file, which I could play on my computer, but could not burn it to disc, convert it or split it in windows moviemaker. Tried to delete it, and it would not let me. Had to find it in “search” and managed to delete it from there.
(2)   Since then I am having same problem with ALL “AVI” files I download. At the moment I am NOT having any problems with WMV or MPG files at all
(3)   DvdSanta 4.00 FULL Version Build 6001 – using Verbatim DVD recordable disc 4.7GB
(4)   Can load file into dvdSanta, but as soon as I click “Create DVD” button, shuts down programme immediately. Same in WinAVI Video Converter. In Windows moviemaker it freezes my computer fully.
(5)   Copywrite protection is not a problem on these files – if there was I think the programmes would have said.

After downloading those files, do you always run them through AVG?
I'm not familiar with DVDSanta, but did you try to reinstall it?
Any other strange behavior of your computer?

What exactly is DVDsanta, and you may want to just insert the CD and drag+drop onto the drive.

Hi Broni, thanks for replying.

My computer is programmed to update and check whole system daily by AVG.

It is NOT dvdSanta. Problem is same with all programmes I try and use on any AVI File.
In all other file formats eg WMV & MPG, all programmes work perfectly. It is an AVI problem.

I experimented with dvdSanta – which is a DVD burning programme – by sandwiching an AVI file between two WMV files, in this order WMV-AVI-WMV.The programme encrypted the first WMV file OK, but as soon as it started on the AVI file, it shut itself down completely.

Only other funny thing I have noticed on my computer is I am occasionally seeing a message flag up bottom right hand corner of screen “ AVG email auto scan Bas 14 – Toronto 12”. Not sure if this is exact, because it only lasts for about two seconds, but basically the same. And maybe computer is running a bit slower – hard to tell.

The rule of safety is this:
After downloading any file from not well known Internet source, ALWAYS, right click on it, and click Scan with AVG.

Hi Broni,

I only use those three programmes (Windows Movie Maker, WinAVI video converter & dvdSanta) and they all work perfectly on other video formats, except any AVI file.

And before this problem started, AVI worked perfectly with them as well.

Hi Broni,

I can not download this file, for some reason.

But I notice that it uses "Media Player Classic". Someone I used to know, downloaded this player for me, but I found it was in conflict with "Windows Media Player 7" which I had on the machine. I deleted "Classic" the best way I could, and installed "Windows Media Player 11" from a disc to over-ride the two previous programmes. This had to be around the same time that my AVI problem started.

Do you think there is a connection, and what is my next step?

Hi Broni,

Managed to download XP codec file this morning OK – but has not made any difference to AVI Problem.

With regards to “Quote” (installed “Windows Media Player 11”) I was talking to my Word/Access/Excel teacher at Night College, about this problem and told me it would over-ride any conflict issues. It was a plain disc. Only used it over Xmas hols. Problem started long before then.

Hi Broni,

Took your advice and completely rebooted Windows, allowing it to delete all programmes. Checked an AVI file, and at moment problem seems to be solved.

But, when I tried to open Windows MovieMaker, which was installed by the Windows start-up disc, it will not open. Downloaded latest version from Microsoft, and still will not open.

Message reads "Windows Movie Maker cannot be used because the required audio hardware cannot be found on your computer"

Can you help and advise what has gone wrong now, please?

Now I have had time to check properly - I still have exactly the same problems with AVI files. WMV or MPG are not affected.

But now I am in a worse position, because besides Windows Moviemaker not working, I tried to re-install my Windows XP Office disc, and the computer kept freezing. I then tried to instal my Lexmark printer from disc, and the programme goes a little way and then freezes.

I really hope you can help me here, because I do not know what is happening here, or what to do about it.

I have noticed that since I rebooted my system, and trying to find out what is still wrong - I went into Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager, and that two of the headings are in a "yellow question mark" mode. They are entitled Multimedia Controller & Raid Controller.

Would this have anything to do with the AVI problems etc. I have still got, and if they are, what can I do about them?

Multimedia Controller, possible influence. Usually it concerns your audio device.
Under what section in Device Manager is it listed? Unknown devices?
Is your sound device listed OK?

The two files are listed under "Other Devices" Not sure which is my "Sound Device" but, everything else seems OK.

May I add this - When I last rebooted, I allowed my machine to wipe off every AVI file. I then went on to the Internet and downloaded a small file which was in both WMV and AVI formats. There was no problem with the WMV file, but there was with the AVI file, and it did not want to allow me to delete it either.

I went down to my local computer shop at the time, and they asked me what I was going to use the computer for.

I said I was not interested in games, but I wanted it for downloading music, films and the Internet in generalso they built me this machine

From what I can work out, I have the following components installed

Power supply. It is either 300 or 400 - not sure which, or where to find information

I know that there is a video capture card inside, because I wanted to save all the family video films to DVD, which I did do as they are now safe on the external hard drive, before they became to eroded by usage, but I don't know where to find out the information on this is. My Windows installation disc is a legal one

Hi Broni,

I am not having much success in downloading driver SAA7134. I have downloaded a zipped
folder titled "MuchTVplus" which seems according to Driverguide contains it, and have
extracted all files, but now I do not know which icon to open. As I said before I am
only a novice.

With regard to my AVI problem, this morning I finished downloading an AVI film, tried
to open it, with same problems as before, but this time I got a message from Microsoft
which read :-

"Problem caused by XviD

This problem was caused by XviD.

As for your driver...
Unzip MuchTVplus to known location.
Go to Device Manager, right click on Multimedia Controller, click Update driver, and point Driver Wizard to the folder where you unzipped MuchTVplus file.

As for avi files, let's go back a little.
Can you play them at all, or you have problems while burning them?

Hi Broni,

This is crazy! Had MuchTVplusunzipped in C Drive / Programme files.Tried to point Driver Wizard to "C" Drive, which did not show up at all in list - nor did "D" Drive. So used web service to locate and actioned.

Went into Device Manager to check status, Multimedia Controller has gone, but RAID
Controller was still there, plus seven (7) "unknown devices", all in yellow.

While I was watching six (6) of the "unknown devices" cleared themselves, leaving RAID Controller and one (1) "unknown device", which is where it is at the moment.

I noticed a message pop up - bottom right hand corner - which said "Found new hardware - A problem occurred during installation. Your new hardware might not work correctly"

With regard to the AVI problem. When I re-booted my system I allowed it to clear all my AVI files, hoping to clear the problem. Since then I have downloaded one (1) AVI file into an incoming folder already containing WMV and MPG files.

Once the AVI file was downloaded, I could no longer open this folder at all. I managed by using the "Search" facility, and its name to send it to a new folder that I had set up.

Now the original incoming folder, I can open correctly, but the new folder containing the AVI file closes itself immediately, with the message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Etc", and this is what is happening to only, but every AVI file.
And the same thing happens if I try to use this file with WinAVI, dvdSanta, Nero or Windows Moviemaker.

You say you have an unknown device & a raid controller device correct? but isn't that under 'other devices'?

What do you see under 'Sound, video & game controllers'? I think that's where you need to correct things (Broni?)

Right click 'my computer' in the start menu, then properties > hardware > device manager and check.

To update the MuchTVplusunzipped, you'll need to update the driver 'manually' & then select it's location.

"Raid Controller" & "Unknown Device" are both under the banner "Other Devices". They both have a yellow question mark (?) icon with an explanation mark (!) on top.

Under the "Sound, video & games controllers" banner, I have seven (7) listings

(3) Legacy Audio Drivers
(4) Legacy Video Capture Devices
(5) Media Control Devices

They all have a black/grey "loudspeaker" icon.

With regard to the "MuchTVplus" all I can do there is delete the programme, and re-download it, or do a complete system reboot.

First, click express & install all high priority updates, then run again & click custom to see if there are any hardware updates.

Information about the disinfector can be found here

Also, download the k-lite codec pack (if you haven't already) from here

And, check the driver version of your video card:

Control panel > performance & maintanence > system > hardware > device man > display adaptors, then double click 'Nvidia GeForce FX 5200' & then select driver tab at the top.

Should see 'driver version' below, the latest version is 169.21 & can be downloaded here

If you have an older version, download 169.21 to any location, follow above steps to get to the driver window & click on 'update driver' then 'install from a list or specific location (advanced)' then navigate to & select the driver you just downloaded.

As Broni said, I doubt it's a driver problem but it can't hurt to try.
