slow internet speed...

HELP ME !!!!!

I need some serious help.. my internet speed is dead slow.. it can take from 5 mins plus just to load a web page..
my os is xp and dsl...
what is causing all these headaches...

Im ready to throw this thing out the window....

I have done a disc clean and a defrag but nothing is helping this traumatic situation.... Please someone help me...

Sounds like you need to do some house cleaning. Try going to "Tools/Internet Options". Here you can "Delete Cookies" and  "Delete Files".

Delete all the things it finds. Your 'puter will thank you.

I don't see any mention of running a Anti-Virus program, be sure to update and run your AV program often.  If you don't have one, might I suggest a free one that works great.

Are you behind a router ?
What kind of firewall are you using?

outlook express works fine, hotmail can get bogged down.

pc works fine when not online..

nope, no router..

no, havent checked with my provider.

I am using adaware se and have done several scans to no success..

how do I check how many programs in the registry I am running???

I even went as far as reformating but still the problem is there....

"  This is probably a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway.....After you formatted your hard drive and removed all the data from it .......and then did a clean install of Win Xp .....installed your anti virus program , then went online to Micro Soft to get all the updates .....was the download speed ok ?

heres the thing, the updates were completed successfully... I can view web pages for the first couple of goes then thats it, after I get to about the 4th or 5th page I cant go any further... usually I switch off the puter and restart, then get back on the net and do it all again, next couple of pages and off again...
Its starting to get really frustrating I want to throw this thing out the window but I would probably hit the neighbours house and come back at me..

would it have anything to do with the ram.. it hasnt done this before but its worth an ask... I only have 256 but it is shared with my graphics...

tori_73.....what happens if you open a web page look at it and close it .......you mean that if you repeat that 5 or 6 times that the page simply wont open . Do you ever empty your temporary internet folder , delete your cookies or clear your history file ?

thats about it,, if I access the same page 5 times in a row it will get slower and slower till it wont load at all.. I always delete the temp internet files and cookies..

Based on these results , I would be contacting your ISP and asking them what download speed you should be getting from them .

Can you think back to when this all started .......Did you download any updates .......or possibly any sort of system optimizer ......or were there any phone problems ? .....perhaps a severve storm in your area which effected the phone lines ?

I contacted my isp and they say I am downloading at good speed and there is nothing wrong with my connection that it must be a hardware problem... I have never heard of a hardware problem causing the failure to load pages (except where the hdd needs a clean up)...
So now Im at a loss as to what I can do... :-/

If you have a dial up connection ...then thats not bad .....however if you have a Cable or DSL connection ....somethings wrong.

Well ....I don't know what to tell you other than we both have DSL connections ...look at the differance between our D/L tests.......You say you have defragged your hard drive , emptied your temp files , dumped your history files .......Do you have lots of space available on your hard drive ? You could try shutting down your firewall just to check , but I don't think its effecting your d/L speed .......Do you have any other scanners which may be running and slowing down your D/l ?

What download speed did your ISP tell you they are delivering ? You also have to remember that your ISP help or tech support may not be staffed by people who really know anything .........They have a book ......and they ask you some questions and then based on your reply open the book and recite whatevers there .......and they will usually try and suggest the problem is yours not theirs .

hey, whenever  u delete temp and cookies restart the
computer and check the cpu usage thats by pressing ctrl+alt +del ,click task manager and select performance tab , see how many % usage and let me know that.
