Slow download speed on brand new ThinkPad?

I just received my brand new Lenovo T61 Series ThinkPad in the mail today. 

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB RAM
160 GB HDD 7200rpm
Running on Vista Home Premium

I was attempting to install AIM messenger on my computer and discovered that the download speed wouldn't go past 20 K/sec.  I have my old Gateway running on XP and my download speed is over 10 times that, connected to the exact same network.

It's not just AIM either.  I went through and went to download other things with the exact same problem.

Is there something that I'm doing wrong, or is that normal?  Everything else seems to be running wonderfully.
It just doesn't seem right because the computer is literally less than a day old.

I think you should download and run this file : filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Download /Install and run this . Go to Start/Run type in msconfig . Open up the Startup Tab and see what's ticked in there. Many of theses can be dissabled except for
Anti Virus Software
ccApp
MSASCui
ctfmon
Untick the rest and reboot. Do Disc Cleanup and defragment disc. I am sure the downloading speed will be normal by then.. See I too was advised these steps before implementing turbomeeting for conferencing as it consume lot of bandwidth during video streamings.

Is it wireless, or hard connection? Router involved?

Download, and install TCP Optimizer: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Open it, and put a checkmark in Optimal Settings. Click Apply changes button.
Restart computer, and see if it helped.

Yeah I tried his plan, but it's still the same problem.  My download speed tops out at about 20 K/sec.

It is a wireless connection.  We have a wireless N router and this computer has a wireless N card, but the fast one doesn't. 

Is there some kind of settings I should change or something?  nothing has worked so far.

Go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove, and...
Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint:
    * Viewpoint Manager
    * Viewpoint Media Player
    * Viewpoint Toolbar

You need to update your Java:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
#4 - Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5
Uninstall all previous versions of Java through Add\Remove.

Disable Windows Defender, as it'll interfere with cleaning process:
   * Open Windows Defender
    * Click Tools
    * Click General Settings
    * Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
    * Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection
    * After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
    * Close Windows Defender

Open HJT, and checkmark following entries (no actual programs will be removed; we'll prevent them only from starting with Windows:

I'm still having all of the same problems, and now it's even worse.  My browsers are all running extremely slow and my download speed won't even break 10 k/sec

I ran the CCleaner and the HJT and they didn't help much.

Are there any other possibilities?
