Hi,
My CPU has been making scary noises lately, when i turn on the comp , the CPU makes a lot of noise which dies out in some time.
Could this harm my computer?

Lets start by clearing up a few things.
This is a CPU. CPUs can't make any noises at all.

This is a computer case.

Plenty of things inside a computer can generate noise.
Fans, hard drives, disc drives, power supplies.
So we will need to know what is making the noise before we can tell you how serious a problem it is.

The simplest way would be to take of the side of the case, power the computer on and try and listen your way to the part making the noise.

There is usually some screws on the back on the front panel comes off an the side will have a thumb screw or there are two push buttons. Usually its only caused by wires brushing up against the fan. So Its not the cpu.-

If you undo the wrong screws, the psu will fall down inside the case and smash the motherboard and cards on it.

Ivy -- if your computer case is vertically oriented, then there is a fan and on / off switch that is probably at the top of the case in the back. You'll see four screws around them in a more or less rectangular shape. Don't undo any of those, as they are probably holding the power supply in place.

You'll probably be able to tell the screws that are holding the sides of the case in place. Sometimes, there are no screws in back -- everything's held in place by metal flanges, and the screws are actually in the front of the case, behind the plastic case front that can be removed.

The scary noises are probably from internal fans or CD drives that spin up to speed when the computer is first turned on.

Ivy just 2 tell u the area on the bak of the comp were ur pwr cable plugs into ur comp if the Power Supply's fan is causing all the noise then DONT take out the Power supply much less open it up it for ur safety since the transformers that change the AC current of ur house's wiring into DC are extremly dangerous. but in the case that ur pwr supply's fan is the prob then take it to a computer repair shop. they hve the right tools to replace ur pwr supply's fan

This is the info that i have of my pc, please dont get mad at me i really dont know anything about these things.
Microsoft window xp pro Version 2002
Service pack 2,v.2096
Computer (Intel R)
Pentium(R)4 CPU 2.40 GHz
512MB Of RAM.

I had everest before but dont have it now, i can get it if i need to, also was custom made i think.

I'm just scared to open the comp case myself.

You gave us the specs which is another thing that we mite need. Get a side,back,front shoot of the case and well be able to tell you.

Alright, remember i said some days back that my Computer case is making noise, Now today it just shut down on its own , rest everything was working , the monitor ,the speakers , only the ''Computer case'' or whatever we call it wasn't working 1!
Now I know i need to post the pictures first , I will get that done tomorrow .

Is it bad news that it just shut down like this?

ok sounds like somethings definetly wrong with the power supply...
since the monitor and speakers ar not powered by the pwr supply its only the computer itself.
squall, street it sounds like the pwr supply.

You have a failing fan somewhere and the system is shutting down to protect itself...i'd suggest not trying to use the machine any further until you can have it looked at by someone who knows the inner workings of a computer...
Otherwise you risk serious damage.

Yeah it restarted again , I'm not gonna use it for sometime now, till I get it checked.

but just think about it the fans in the computer dont shut down bythemselves, only the Pwr Supply fan can only shutdown itself since there are fuses in the Pwr Supply.

This is inaccurate and bad advice at best...fans on both the CPU and or the graphics card can be shut down by the system without you knowing it and cause permanent damage to expensive components.
This can be caused by a number of factors which i won't list here.
Please do some research before making broad statements such as the above...

I guess it is very much board-dependent as to whether any kind of alarm is built-in...I've seen that sort of thing in BIOS, sometimes, and pretty much leave the settings at defaults.

Of course it could.
So could the vid card fan, the CPU fan etc etc.
Since the case hasn't been opened yet it's impossible to guess which one it may be.

Ive had this same complaint twice. Both times the cpu fan was going out. The noise was the fan trying to run but couldn't spin fast enough.

No, the fan was worn out. When the sleeve or bearings go out in a fan thay can be quite noisy.

Alright I'm back home , I switched on my comp yesterday and it worked just fine and its still working(I'm glad cause I didn't wanna spend money on it these days) , it doesn't turn off on its own anymore(earlier it would'nt stay on for even 2 minutes) , but I don't know how long its gonna last.
I've got a few days left at home so I'm gonna visit my granma in a few days and when I'm done with that I'll get my comp checked, I'm really very busy these days with papers n stuff , I might go to U.S. soon.

I'll let you guys know soon.

Hi guys ,
My first post after a long time.
Its good news, I got my comp checked recently and the guy who fixed it showed me a box which he removed from the computer case and replaced it with another.
He said that it was what supplied power to the whole thing.
In short my power supply had gone dead.

Good that he explained what he did.

Replacing a power supply is not terribly difficult, but it's one of those things that ought be done properly! The nice thing about having someone do it for you is that you probably have a warranty period in case anything goes wrong.
