Windows media player wont play MPG files
    « on: March 27, 2008, 02:40:56 PM »
Im using windows media player 10 on windows xp pro. For the past week ive noticed it now wont play MPG video clips. It keeps telling me "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a required codec is not installed on your computer". Ive been using the codec "ffdshow video decoder" for the past few months now and havent had a problem with it, does anybody know whats wrong?

"ffdshow video decoder" doesnt support mpeg.

      Thats why.

Search for a new codec or D/L "VCL Player" it supports mpeg

      Hope this helps

I downloaded VCL player, its works but id rather use windows media player as my universal player, ffdshow video decoder does support MPG1 and MPG2 because i went into the options and it says it supports them formats.

What codec would you recommend? arent the codecs ment to be already build into windows media player?

ffdshow does support mpeg decoding, it is just disabled by default.
But in my experience it works fine so you can just enable it.
WMP doesn't have any codecs built in. It relies entirely on external codecs.

Have you enabled both MPEG1 and MPEG2?

Is it MPEG 1 or MPEG 2 encoded files it wont play?
If you don't know download MediaInfo.
You say it used to work... have you installed or removed any software around the time it stopped working.

I downloaded mediainfo Deerpark, it seems to be the MPEG 1 files that aren't working. Last week i did install DivX to see what it was like, i wonder did that cause the problem, i have it uninstalled now

Considering the user already solved his problem your link is kind of pointless quaden_haosac...

And 8.6d is not the latest version btw...
