    Maxtor Unformateable Drives Maxtor Brand??

I got my gaming pc up an runing again but it wont see the drive the first time I booted.  So since I changed the MB I thought about just formating them.  Thing is these are "MAXTOR DRIVES" so I went to use Maxblast since that how I do mostly all my drives.  Also, since most are maxtor.  It came up saing that it couldnt find any ATA drives or any at all, once I got in.  But it seen that I had one that wasnt being used as my boot drive an not part of the system.  So I dont now since this is usually how I setup my drives.

How old are the physical drives, roughly?

Weren't there different cluster / sector formats some years ago?  LBA?  I can't remember...

Also, my feeble brain wonders what file format they are?  FAT16?  FAT32?

        I'm no spring chicken, anymore...more like a year-round turkey...  ;)

Just wondering....why did you use Maxblast?

                1. Objective Unclear.  Operating System installation?
I got my gaming pc up an runing again but it wont see the drive the first time I booted.  So since I changed the MB I thought about just formating them.

Not sure where you started, where you are at, or where you are going with this.

It sounds like you swapped motherboard and tried to run from previously built operating system (Windows XP?).  Seems like the BIOS would have to see the drive before you could even hope to boot from it.  The drive does not need to be formatted for the BIOS to see it (although the jumpers and cabling needs to be correct).  So let's start there.  Also if you changed motherboard type, you probably need to reinstall Windows XP.

                2.  Motherboard.  Make and Model number of motherboard (and which processor?).

                3.  Maxtor Drives.  You have two Maxtor drives, one 160 GB, the other 320 GB.  Are they Serial ATA (SATA) or Parallel ATA (PATA) interfaces? What are their model numbers?

                4.  Operating System CD.  What type of Installation CD will you be using?
Windows XP? Home Edition or Professional?  Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1),
SP2, or SP3 (is it available yet)?

Retail version (Full or Upgrade)?  OEM version (Dell, Gateway, other)?  Corporate Volume License version?

Legitimate CD or the "Brotherhood of the Coast" version?

                        1.  Comment.  You're not working with a "mainstream" configuration.  Do you know of anyone else who has put Windows XP Professional (SP2?) onto your server motherboard?  The only Windows XP operating system reference I saw for your motherboard said "Windows XP Professional (SP1 only)"; but it was dated August 2005 I believe.

                        2.  Wont see the drive.

You said you weren't able to see the drive (from Maxblast).  I would remove all hard drives except the one you want to build Windows XP Professional on.  Then I would configure the system and BIOS for a single hard drive configuration.  If SATA, I would check the Maxtor 320 GB drive to see if there are jumpers to downgrade it to 1.5 GB/s throughput (to match motherboard capability).  If PATA, I would make sure I got the "jumpers" correct (master/slave/single?).  Then I would crawl through the BIOS  paying particular attention to the IDE/SATA configuration options.

If single SATA drive, I believe you want to disable "SATA RAID", and somehow get it configured on "first" channel (assuming that's where BIOS wants to boot from).

Maybe check "MaxBlast" to see if it can access SATA drive.

Second option would be to format the hard drive during the installation of Windows XP Professional.

Basically I would play with the BIOS settings until either MaxBlast or Windows XP CD can access the hard drive.

I didn't see your hard drive listed as one that's compatible with the motherboard; also  SATA drives appear to be non-functioning

So can you tell me whether you're using a Serial ATA (SATA) or Parallel (PATA) interface with your drive and motherboard?

If you're using SATA you might have to jumper the interface (on the hard drive) down to 1.5 GBps from 3.0 GBps if your motherboard doesn't support the faster speed (and I don't believe it does - see Section 3.2.9 of the Technical Product Spec).

                        Quote
                        3.2.9  Serial ATA (SATA) Controller

The SATA controller supports two SATA devices providing an interface for SATA hard disks and ATAPI devices.  The SATA interface supports PIO IDE transfers up to 16 Mb/s and Serial ATA transfers up to 1.5 Gb/s (150 MB/s).  The 6300ESB I/O's SATA system contains two independent SATA signal ports.  They can be electrically isolated independently.  Each SATA device can have independent timings.  They can be configured to the standard primary and secondary channels.

                        7.  Memory.  What memory are you using?  Does it match the specs of exceptable memory in the Technical Product Specification?

                        8.  Power Supply
                        NOTE
Use only ATX12V or EPS12V compliant power supplies with the server board SE7210TP1-E.  ATX12V and EPS12V power supplies have an additional power lead that provides required supplemental power for the Intel Pentium 4 processor.  The board will not boot if you do not connect the 20-pin (or 24-pin) and 4-pin (or 8-pin) leads of ATX12V or EPS12V power supplies to the corresponding connectors.

Do not use a standard ATX power supply.  The board will not boot with a standard ATX power supply.
