Author Topic: Internet not working on main comp but works on laptop. (Read 14216 times)

Hey.. I am having a problem. When I boot up my main computer which has my modem and wireless router connected to it my internet sometimes works on start for a few minutes but then stops working. (Still tells me my connection is fine). When it stops working on my main computer, my laptop can still connect to the wireless network and it works fine. (Which is how I am posting this thread right now).

Anyway, if I try repairing the connection it won't allow me. I've tried using a static ip. Doesn't work either. I saw another thread on here where someone was having something of the same problem. He thought it was his onboard LAN giving problems. I am just curious as to why it works sometimes right on start up and then just suddenly stops. Should I just buy a new network card or is this solvable? Anyone?

You have modem and router, both connected to the "main computer"?
You connect the router to the modem? And the computer to the router?
How do you connect your "main computer" to the modem or router? You use a network cable?
Through which equipment you are connected to internet?

Yes Viking. Modem to router. Router to main computer using an ethernet cord. I've even tried going directly from the modem to the computer. Still doesn't work. Another thing is now that my computer is freezing during shutdown. I'm not sure if there's some sort of issue going on with my onboard lan. I tried uninstalling then reinstalling the driver and it just says that it is working correctly like before. I've even tried disabling the device in the device manager and it freezes everytime. I have no idea what's going on.

Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

I did that. It started working on the restart for about a minute. But then in stopped again. I don't know what the *censored* is going on. Could it be a virus of some sort?

Installed both of them. Still no luck. What do you suggest next?

There could be many reasons for that kind of malfunctioning.
When you are connected by wire to the router, please create a file with the ip settings of your computers (the one with the problem connected through wire, the one with wireless connection - that still works - leave it connected through wireless).
On each computer: start->run->(write now) ipconfig (space) /all (space) >c:\ipcfg.txt
Paste here the contents of the ipcfg.txt files (c:\ipcfg.txt)

Thanks guys. I'm gonna go buy a network card today and see if it works. If it does, then I'm guessing it would be safe to assume that my onboard LAN is messed up right?

Hey guys. I went to buy a cheap network card today, installed it, and internet is working perfectly. No cut outs, nothing. So I guess you were right Broni. Thank you for all the help. It was much appreciated.

Ya, it was only $16 and change. Anyway, what could have caused it to suddenly stop working like that? Any idea?

Wow. So this is weird. I backed up my entire system and decided to reformat my system drive and reinstall windows. Just because my system wasn't running as fast as it used to. It turns out, I re-enable my onboard LAN in the BIOS and plug the ethernet cable into the onboard, and voila! Internet is working perfectly! lololol. So now I am going to return the network card I bought. This is crazy. I'm assuming it must have been a virus maybe? I am going to purchase some software for that. What is the best or some of the best software out for that? The biggest names i've heard are symantec norton antivirus.. and mccafee any idea what i should get?

Don't touch them. It's garbage.
Turn Windows firewall on, and install free AVG antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

AVG is only an antivirus program.
As for spywares, I'd recommend:
- Download, and install free ThreatFire: http://www.threatfire.com/, which will give you real-time protection against malwares.
It won't interfere with your antivirus, nor firewall.
- Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
- Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html

Last two are not real-time protection programs, but they're excellent tools for occasional manual scanning.

For your own good, leave registry cleaners alone. You don't need them, unless it's really necessary for some particular reason.
One of the feww general cleaners, I may recommend is CCleaner.
