Recover NTFS encrypted files in WinXP
    « on: April 28, 2008, 01:54:16 AM »
By using NTFS encryption feature, I had encrypt some files in my Win XP pro.

After that, I install Win XP using Advanced option on same partition. That Windows folder is renamed as WinXP.

Now I have two windows folders named "Windows" (For old XP) and "WinXP" (For new XP)

After, I just delete all old XP files including "Windows" folder from Windows Explorer.

I totally forget to decrypt the encrypted files on NTFS file system before delete old XP.

Now all encrypted files and the old XP username setting which is found on "Documents and Settings" folder are not opened.

Both says same error message "Access is denied".

Also I am try to copy that files using Fedora Linux 8 but no use.

There is possible way to recover my files.

Without the encryption key, there will be no way to decrypt your files. It sounds to me like you've deleted any hope of recovering those files. There are ways to recover them, but it requires an adminstrator's account plus access to the public key of the user who encrypted the file, which you no longer have.

I have administrator account. But Where can I found public key of the user.

Mention full path of that public key which is default.

If you didn't specify a DRA (data recovery agent) when you encrypted the file and you no longer have that user account, that data is lost.

Wow, I got the solution ...

Advanced EFS Data Recovery (AEFSDR Pro) for Windows is great software to recover encrypted files from NTFS partition. Only partial keys required to recover. Home page is http://www.elcomsoft.com/aefsdr.html

But it is shareware. Only demo is availabe for free download that recover some KB in total file size.

For full recover we must buy it.
