    AVG Ver. 8.0
    « on: May 08, 2008, 11:56:46 AM »
If you haven't already and are an "AVG FREE" user you will be receiving a warning of the termination of AVG Free 7.5 and a requirement to upgrade to ver 8.0 prior to May 31st. Within the installation process there will be an option to check a box if you want to make "Yahoo" your default web search browser. I did not wish to do so (very satisfied with "Google'). However the Yahoo tool bar was created after installation anyway. I don't want it cluttering up my desktop and also reducing it's size. I have checked in "add/remove" programs and it is not there. I have also gone to the AVG forums site and do not see anything there either on how to remove it. Be forwarned. If someone has figured out how to get rid of the Yahoo toolbar please advise. truenorth

Hmm, I installed AVG Free 8.0 without the Yahoo toolbar being installed.  See my discussion of the new version of AVG at http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,56237.0/all.html.  I think you must have made a mistake during installation.  I suggest you uninstall AVG, verify that the Yahoo toolbar is gone, and then reinstall AVG, making sure you unselect the toolbar for installation.

What version of Windows are you running?

I think uninstalling the Link Scanner has something to do with the "security Toolbar" but am not positive.

    Quote
As far as I know... the LinkScanner ( the main part that the toolbar is there for ) doesn't affect the Phishing filter in IE7... it could affect the speed a pages loads as the links are checked for malware... but it wouldn't affect the filter from doing it's job also.

You can not seperate the Yahoo search that is included with the AVG toolbar... note that this is not the Yahoo toolbar... its just the search portion. The toolbar will get other enhancements later according to AVG Technologies but currently the only main ones it has now are the enable/disable functions and the Yahoo search.

If you wish you can also uninstall the linkscanner AVG toolbar as described in the FAQ's. As far as I know there are no solutions or work-arounds for any speed issues you see while its enabled at this time... so that part will have to wait until AVG Technologies can address that in some future update.

I would like to know if the May 31st popups are still happening. And if so what the story is with that.

I just checked my Win 2K installation, where I have 7.5 installed, and there is no warning anymore.

Hi All, Evilfantasy-- I think you have put your finger on my having the Yahoo toolbar installed even though i did not check the box for it. I DID opt for the "Linkscanner" option and obviously that becomes part of the Yahoo toolbar. Sneaky way to get you to install Yahoo when all you really desired was the web scanner ability. I guess they have to pay for the scanner somehow? I cannot yet comment on whether there are still "May 31st " popups re the change date as i now have 8.0 installed on the one that did get the pop up. It is a win xp-pro machine. I do have other computers with win 98,win ME, and win xp-home on them but i have not run any of them yet to see what happens. Another point that has yet to be mentioned (and Grisoft does not mention it on their 8.0 download page) is that 8.0 will NOT install on a win 98 o/s. You only find that out AFTER you do the download and try to install it. i know-i know it is not supported by Bill anymore but i have no doubt that many thousands of users are still using it . Where these users are to go when AVG 7.5 is no longer updated with virus definitions will become a serious problem for the user. truenorth

I am using a win98 to type this. Luckily there is still www.avast.com which is superior to AVG in my opinion since AVG decided to add all of the extras with 8.0.

Link Scanner Lite can be installed, without AVG from Here
Or without installing it at all you can use the Online Link Scanner

I have tried to stop bashing on AVG but I now refer to it as bloat ware.

      To remove existing LinkScanner...

      Download AVG installation file again.
      Go Start>Run, and type in:
      c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
(where "*" are symbols (letter/numbers) in downloaded installation file.)
      Click OK.
It installs AVG over the top, but without LinkScanner feature.
